MGShogun: Is Dawn of War Platinum edition good for newcomers to the series?

I have never play Dawn of War before.
Platinum is base + Winter Assault + Dark Crusade + Soulstorm?

I'd say yes. I had a lot of fun with the single player and I'm not much of a RTS buff. The first two have linear story campaigns and the last two are played kind of like Risk. Steam says I got about 180 hours of them and there was a lot I didn't see. I don't know about multiplayer.

Be aware that DoW2 plays VERY differently. I've heard some people compare it to a multi unit Diablo.

Depending on your playstyle it might me more of a multi unit Commando with Diablo elements. Very different than Dow 1. But I liked it better. (Except Retribution, which just felt stale).

Imo, a "must play" because it was one of the games that brought something new to the RTS table (and it was the game that made me upgrade my rig ;-) )

Edit: I've just noticed... "multi unit Commando" ... well, the green barret was overpowered ;-P

Is there any USA GOG fellow willing to get Bulletstorm while it's still 5USD to me in exchange for a 5USD GOG or 5USD game over Steam? The damned thing is 15USD here in Brazil.

EDIT: Sale has ended. Too bad.

SimonG: Soulstorm is the "worst" of the DoW series. But it can still hold its own. The story is cringeworthy, even more if you know a little bit about 40k. But it still has some awesome replay value.

Still worth 5$ if you can find it for that, imo.
They probably couldn't come up with a plausible story that involves all of the 9 races present in the game fighting each other ;)

It doesn't include Soulstorm, but as others have mentioned, Soulstorm is mostly more of the same, so Platinum should be fine.

It is awesome. DoW II doesn't really play like it. You'll be missing the Soulstorm expac but that's a minor nuisance given the gameplay you're getting.

Thanks! I'm currently downloading it right now so I cannot wait to play it. :)
A Game of Thrones: Genesis is 9.99 USD on Amazon.com today (in addition you get a 5USD coupon for use on some downloadable titles in January):

If no one told you, you just fire up The Dark Crusade and enter the CD keys from the other two (downloadable copies sometimes hide these in your registry, Steam used to be terrible about this, I had to hunt his keys down for his Steam copy for him) and it unlocks all the races. You can just play any race on the world map then (or multiplayer).

Oh thanks for the tip! Much appreciated it. :)

I'm going to fire up The Dark Crusade now.
Anyone have an opinion on the Gothic Complete Pack on steam? I would rather buy from GoG but it's so cheap on steam and Gothic 1 is never on sale.

Sorry to go off topic, but perhaps you could help?

I finished downloading Dawn of War Platinum Edition yesterday. Initially it asked me if i wanted to register Dawn of War + Winter Assault, or The Dark Crusade. I selected Dawn of War + Winter Assault and registered them without any issue. Then I was going to register Dark Crusade, but could no longer find anywhere to register or even run it. There was nothing obviously marked as Dark Crusade in the main folder where dawn of war had been installed to.

Any thoughts?

Hmm, I bought separate boxed copies (Gold which is DoW and Winter Assault and another of TDC), I suspect you possibly didn't install it (if you can play Necrons of Tau you are playing it, I should add) and need to rerun whatever installer you have. I owned multiple copies of each before Platinum box ever came out so I might be a bad one to ask, it may work differently than I was assuming:(

However, you'd likely look for a whole separate install of TDC, that's the final one (before Soulstorm).

Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty sure it installed all of them and it was only asking about registration, but it was about 1am and I was pretty tired so I can't be certain. I'll try rerunning the installer when I get home for lunch. Cheers again.
Should I get Cities in Motion for the Steam sale?

I already have Simcity 4 and Tropico 3. Does it offer anything not found in those games or is it inferior to them in every way?

I like Cities in Motion, allthough it's not very similar to either SC4 or T3. CIM is a transportation sim, and not an unflawed one. You don't build cities or control the town in which you build. You just set up the transportation system. Many aspects of the game are great, and it plays well, but the lack of deep route-control and micromanagement makes it a bit frustrating at times. Still ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT at that price. ;)

1+2 are the best, I hear that the expac for the third one is decent but haven't played it myself. #4 is not even worth worrying about. You wouldn't do wrong by yourself to just buy 1+2 on GOG, but it looks like you'll save money on steam, especially if you're interested in the third and the expac. You get #4 that way as well, but that's almost counting against it :P If you want to save money definately looks like today's deal on Steam is the way to go. Personally I bought 1+2 on GOG, then got the pack on steam when it was on sale (without arcania) before GOG got #3, then got #3 from GOG when it came out here to make my shelf look better :)

If you have the money I would get gothic from GOG, and get Risen from steam, which is more Gothic then ArcaniA will ever be :)
