Ref Amazon and flavors of DRM (question keeps coming up)

Here's another variant. Bought a casual game on sale yesterday (4 Elements).

Not a big download, about 40mb. That used Amazon's downloader to dl the install file. When you install, it demands Amazon's downloader be running so it can check with Amazon to see if you bought that game. After installation you don't need the downloader running and the game runs even if you're not online.

Amazon.com's stuff essentially works like Origin afaik. Well, except for a forum ban banning you from your games and they tend to sell games that allow a large amount of offline core gameplay (which EA seems loathe to do for anything but biggies, like Batman).

XBox Live's countdown to the new year daily is 50% off some Arcade Kinect games:
Hole in the Wall (400 points/5 USD - which is based on the terrible game show)
Leed Mees (400 points/5 USD - spelling may be wrong, looks intriguing but I never played the demo)

Foxhack: The "Foil Conversion" DLC makes the cards shiny. That's it! You pay money to make the cards shiny!
And there's no way to turn them off if your computer has issues with them...

They're kinda like cheating in multiplayer. Half of the players I've grouped with can't read what the shiny cards do due to display errors.

Kabuto: Your killing me with this only 50% off is terrible nonsense.

orcishgamer: It depends, let's take Arkham City, 50% off isn't that great of a deal... because it's been 50% off everywhere already about 3 times in the last month. It's base price hasn't gone down, therefor it's had the exact same sale price. Anyone willing to pull the trigger at the price probably already did.

Now, 50% by itself isn't a bad or a good discount. But when you check the sale price some games at "50% off" aren't all that great of a deal. They've been out a few months and their normal price will meet or beat that price in a couple more.

50% off a 5 or 10 USD game that likely won't be going a lot cheaper even in the next year or two, is a good deal, generally. But you have to consider whether you'll be able to pick it up as part of an indie bundle or other pack for a lot less. So again, neither good nor bad, depends on the buyer, the game, and what the base price is.
Some might not bite the bullet the first time a game goes 50% off though but might do so after seeing it on sale so many times without further discount if the will to play is high enough. Just a thought.

I'd like to get Arkham Asylum, but I'm worried about whether it'll let me play or not. On GG the main graphic says it's "games for windows live", but in the requirements it just says online play requires Window's Live. Does that mean I'll be able to buy, download, and play it (in offline mode) without Window's Live?

You can't save I think without signing into windows live and having a game profile. You could play but not save without live though.

I would ask others to verify this though.

TBH though even with live it's not bad. I made a free account with a free email address and it signs in once every time you start playing to record your achievments and to allow you to store your saves but that seems to be it.

Except he's in Cambodia.

And I somehow don't think they have Games for Windows Live. Don't buy it, man.

If he's not worried about it you can crack the GFWL out of disable it.

If you live in an unsupported country just create a new Live account and lie about your location. It doesn't check your IP or anything. My Live account says I live in Mexico and I'm able to play online just fine. My only regret is that I should have created a US account instead because buying MS points is region restricted, so your Credit Card address must match your account location. My only choice to buy DLC is to redeem a MS points card but those are region restricted too and it is much harder to buy a Mexican card than a US one.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking, except this is where I get confused: I don't think Windows Live is available here, BUT the local Nokia shop is actively promoting the fact that the new Windows Nokia phones support Windows Live. It's fairly common for shops here to promote things they can't actually provide (as there is very little regulation to stop them).

I tried signing up with a free game to test it, as someone else here suggested, but it said my email account was already registered to Window's Live (which I've never done), none of my usual passwords match, and when I hit the reset password button, it doesn't send the new one to my email address which it says is valid. :/ Guess I need a new email address and "new" windows live account (even though I didn't have an old one), all just to see if it works?

Thanks for all the advice so far

Yeah, it's not like you don't know anyone in Mexico.

hermitek: games from Amazon:
A lot of discounted SEGA games, for example:
Rome: Total War - Gold Edition - $1.99
Medieval II: Total War - Gold Edition - $1.99
and then there's Tropico 4 for $5.00 (uses GFWL DRM)
avatar
dutchexcalibur: Regarding the Total War series, which one would be good to pick up for a newbie to the series? Are all the games Steamworks?
Napoleon and Empire can be activated on Steam, Medieval II can't. I don't know abou others.

Someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong but you'll have to sign in at least once. GFWL let's you play in offline mode just fine, in theory (some people claim to have problems, but usually their issues turn out to be 2 years old or more). Some older games used to make it optional.

If you do buy a GFWL game, you should be aware that it encrypts your save files and signs them with a signing key. You must back up these keys (the internet should have plenty of tutorials), it's not hard to do, there just an extra file to back up but you will lose all your progress should you move the save games over to a new comp and lose your keys.
