What's so bad about getting it from Steam?

I guess it's because steam could take away your account at any time meaning you wouldn't have access to any of the games you purchased, plus you need to run the client for almost every game on it.

At least if you buy off Gamersgate and the game is DRM free you can redownload it as many times as you want and no risk getting your acc banned etc.

Steam = DRM = evil = hate, etc.

Rohan15: What kind of protection does Medieval II: Total Warfare have?
Not sure about that version, but it's pretty light on the retail version as it was released before DRM went berserk. Or, to put it another way, it was released before Bioshock.

I disagree, the dark ages of DRM were Starforce and its unholy spawn!

SirPrimalform: What's the DRM on the GG version? I ask because GG says DRM-free but I've seen Tages mentioned a few times elsewhere.

grviper: Ze official Egosoft patches killed all DRM even on TC a while ago.
Cool cool. Do you know if said updates are already integrated into the GG version or whether I need to grab them and include them in my backup?

Was this directed at me? Well it's £40 on Steam (not on sale) and I don't like having to run a client to play my games.

Steam Daily is shifting CoD MW2
Activision still wants $30 for a 2 year old game? Good luck with that.

Starforce has always been unutterably terrible. That much is very true. That said, Medieval 2 used a SecuROM disc check.

etna87: These two look like really good deals, but unfortunately, it's US only...

grviper: No cheap Am Fluss der Zeit in Deutschland?
Nope. Seems to be publishing right problems. Even on Steam EU can only get the first Drakensang. River of Time as well as the expansion Phileasson's Secret are US only. Though I can confirm that gifting works.
Was wondering if any of our kind American cousins could help me get Dungeon Siege 3 as it is a Steam game from Amazon ? I will send paypal or a 5.99 GOG ? thanks :)

Ordinarily, I'd agree with you, but Steam has become so monolithic that it's practically a case of "too big to fail". If Steam went bust and you had a shit-load of backups that could no longer be activated, there is guaranteed to be a group of hackers out there to provide a proper way to circumvent the DRM (in fact, such methods are already readily available, but I won't expand upon that here). I don't really like Steam either, but it's a good way to

All GamersGate games, however, do require an internet connection upon installation, regardless of whether they write "DRM-free". Any DRM specified is in addition to GG's own DRM (except Steam keys of course).

No, I meant in general, I was just wondering if GG offers any extra content or benefit over the Steam version.

Basically all I want is TC+Albion, so unless the Superbox allows to gift the games I already have (X2\X3) I'd better wait for the christmas sales and get them separately. Unless, again, the pack from GG offers something extra.

The DRM that's bypassed by simply using the task manager to end the downloader process while the installer is running? I'd say that's less intrusive than Steam. ;)

It's interesting you should mention that... in the GamersGate edition, X1, XT, X2 and X3 are all bundled together, while TC and the bonus disc are separate. As far as I can tell, you could gift the bundle and keep TC. That's just speculation though... there's also the fact that the GG version registers on Steam, so you are getting extra if you buy it from GG sort of.
Buying on Steam will get you the game on Steam. Buying it on GG will get you the game on GG and on Steam, plus it's way cheaper at GG at the moment.
