Avogadro6: What's so bad about getting it from Steam?
Druidshinobi: I guess it's because steam could take away your account at any time meaning you wouldn't have access to any of the games you purchased, plus you need to run the client for almost every game on it.
At least if you buy off Gamersgate and the game is DRM free you can redownload it as many times as you want and no risk getting your acc banned etc.
Ordinarily, I'd agree with you, but Steam has become so monolithic that it's practically a case of "too big to fail". If Steam went bust and you had a shit-load of backups that could no longer be activated, there is guaranteed to be a group of hackers out there to provide a proper way to circumvent the DRM (in fact, such methods are already readily available, but I won't expand upon that here). All GamersGate games, however, do require an internet connection upon installation, regardless of whether they write "DRM-free". Any DRM specified is in addition to GG's own DRM (except Steam keys of course).
