GameRager: Buy the game so you have a legal copy purchased, then torrent the game. Non totally legal, I know, but if you own the game it's more morally ok.
jlg6184: You can still be prosecuted for piracy, whether you own a copy of the game or not. That is why I never recommend it (moral or not). When you purchase a game, you are only purchasing the rights to use that game through that particular distribution method. That is why it is illegal to make back-up (even if they don't aggressively prosecute.)
An example, I own NWN: Diamond, picked it up a few years back at GameStop, so I should be able to go to the local torrent/warez site and grab the GOG version?
Didn't think so...
Those are two different versions so your analogy doesn't hold....that'd be like owning a PC version and downloading a console version and vice versa, or downloading expacs you never paid for. What I suggested would be more akin to downloading the same game versions(with or without expacs to match the one you originally paid for, and also the correct/same platform version)...which is technically different than what you used as an example.
Also a backup is totally legal according to federal law/eula, it's making one that's not allowed......thus the catch 22. In order to get the legal backup you're entitled to under EULA you have to break the eula by copying the game. And btw in most cases making backups when prosecuted was thrown out of court if that was the ONLY way a user broke the eula when brought to court. The times many were prosecuted/fined/jailed was when they also uploaded the games to others on torrents(this can be blocked so you don't do it while downloading) or when people also sold game copies digitally or via disc.
Druidshinobi: Well i can't torrent it, i never download torrents since i don't want viruses or police at my door :P
Look okay, the reason why i don't want GFWL on my computer is because i've heard nothing but bad things about it. Not to mention when i did install it, i had constant updates and it wouldn't let me save offline.
So if i create a offline profile, i can save anytime offline right and won't have to update my GFWL?... I have dirt 2 and haven't played it because of GFWL but if it really isn't too bad i might try it as long as once i have an offline profile i don't have to go back online every week or something to check i still own the game -_-.
You can also just download a crack and not torrent the game, to strip the gfwl out. But if you also want yes you can run GFWL after it's fully updated in offline mode with saves to the local PC you're playing it on, and it's not too intrusive. When you play a dock will appear at the top of the screen to allow you to use it's features as you play.
