Played the Gothic 4 demo and like it. I think it is worth $12, I know it is not like older Gothic games and looks like it is fun.

Gothic 1 always felt more than work than fun to me.
Oh, and apparently Play.com has Demons' Souls at a lower price, about 17 euros or 13-14 GBPs. This is the lowest I have ever seen it.

i dont know how anyone would recommend the gothic series to be purchased :( in short there are better rpgs that you can spend 100's of hours into instead of pulling your hair out playing the gothic series, just as the name its barbaric, i would not recommend this one unless you are an hardcore rpg gamer who can ignore anything bad and complete the game

say what you will about the gothic series, but I personally found it to be one of the best(haven't played anything after 2 yet, the rest is not gothic imho). YES it takes awhile to get the controls down, YES the graphics are not great, YES its confusing, but it is also one of the best crafted rpg series of ALL time, and I even found the controls to be decent, no, preferable, after awhile. But of course this is my opinion, and I understand that a lot of people don't like the games, just wanted to support the other side ;).

Eh, with regards to Gothic - took me about 2 minutes to figure out the controls and maybe a couple of hours (remember: killable enemies are scarce in Gothic early game) of gameplay to figure out how to fight effectively and that was it. Such a learning curve is FAR less steep than many other RPGs that I can think of.

Being someone who got sucked into buying the Gothic games based on all the talk on these forums when it was on sale last year:

Gothic 2 has never ran for me on Steam. At all. Period. Never. Zip. I think I got to the title screen once, and then it crashed. I've never gotten back to it again.
Gothic 3 does not deserve to be paid for or pirated. It is a completely broken game from every single aspect possible for a game. It doesn't correctly work on ANY level. Even with the fan patch, it doesn't change many fundamental flaws in the game. Specifically the "feel" of the game. When you strike an enemy, you should have some type of registry of the hit. I never got that in Gothic. It's like a detached floating feeling. It also doesn't run well even with the latest fan patches. The game engine is completely broken inherently.
Maybe if you can look past all these flaws, be willing to invest time to learn the system and fan patch the game you might find something. Or you could just buy an RPG from a developer who doesn't fail at their job and cut out all the middle man.

Gothic III is a game that wasn't finished, the original developers from gothic were rushed getting it out and afterwards split with the publisher and lost the rights to use the Gothic name (as the publisher, not the developer) owned it. So they went and developed Risen whcih was also a good open world rpg in a similar sense to the Gothic games and has a sequel on the way.
Gothic I and II I recommend to ANY rpg fans who understand that they are older games, they don't look good compared to todays games and are rough around the edges in terms of controls and functions. It takes time to get used to it all but once you do underneath it is a great rpg series that is unique in itself and has depth that you don't get much even compared to the Elder Scrolls series.

The whole idea "Rough around the edges" equals out to "Developer has no idea how to smooth out mechanics for a complete gaming system". You can play games for free that are better developed then the Gothic games.
What you're paying for are broken (in Gothic 3's case), and unplayable games (in Gothic2's case) that you the player have to "work around" to "enjoy".
if that's your thing, by all means enjoy it. It's not for most people.

Correction, Gothic 2 does not work on *some* modern computers.
They could very well have been launched in a perfectly bug-free state and still not work on modern computers. In fact, as far as I remember, the worst problem is an issue with the Nvidia drivers, not the game (so, if you have an Nvidia card, you should look around and see if it was ever fixed before buying).
A game not running at all on your pc is a risk you take every time you buy a game from GOG. Buying an old game on Steam, doubly so.
An old game with issues on modern pcs does not equal a bad game.

As far as working, I played Gothic I and II when they came out, they worked fine for me back then.
You can't fault developers for developing a game then it having problems years down the road on an OS that didn't exist at the time.
I played Gothic 2 fine on XP, never tried on Win7 though but a lot of older games have problems on newer os's without tweaks and work arounds.
