Runehamster: Huh. I'm confused. I've been meaning to play Half-Life 2 for a while (no interest in the original Half-Life at the moment, sorry) so I went ahead and got Episode 2 - I mean, hey, $2, that's just a tad bit more than a coke nowadays. Do I need to wait to play Episode 2 'til I can get Episode 1? Is there a story, and will I spoil it for myself? Even after reading a couple of reviews, all I've gotten is a general impression of "PLAY THIS GAME" and the blatant assumption from every reviewer that I've already played every Half-Life game if I'm even looking at this. I still have no clue if it's dependent on having some clue what went on in the previous games.

CaptainGyro: you should play the other ones first ,yes
Thanks - I'll wait to download that then, I'm in no rush, since I just got Psychonauts and I'm still getting face-eated in Far Cry.

no seriously episode 2 is different at least i felt it was different than hl2 and ep1 although i did not like the ending
however just playing episode 2 without knowing the hl series just becomes a fragfest

Episode 2 continues the story exactly where you left it off in episode 1. It assumes you know the main characters, know how to use the weapons and know some of the game mechanics. The story will, indeed, be chopped off. If you have a rather large backlog, leave it unplayed until you can buy episode 1 or someone gifts it to you. Some people may still have old episode 1 codes from buying the Orange box or some other promo where ep. 1 was included.

Thank you - that's what I suspected. I appreciate it, and I'll just hold off 'til I get a copy of Episode 1.

If you don't own Portal, Team Fortress 2 or any of the Half-Life 2's I would HIGHlY suggest getting The Orange Box. If you can find it for fifty or less it is of massive value because when you unlock it on Steam it gives you even more than the back of the box mentions including the entire Half-Life 2 collection.

If you're referring to Half-LIfe 2 Deathmatch and Lost coast as extras not mentioned, those are free to all steam users.

Lost Coast is free. But HL2 Deathmatch isn't. That costs $5.

A friend of mine bought the game during the Steam sale. :p

I don't think it mentions the second or third Half-life 2 episodes on the back of the package nor the TF2 Beta....although why anyone would want the Beta if they have the final TF2 beats me.

Eh, I didn't know about the Orange Box before buying TF2 for $10. And I got Portal almost a year ago for free in some sort of Steam promo. That's why I'm trying to pick up the Half-Life games during Steam sales, but they seem to go on sale pretty often :D

Well there is no episode 3 but why steam still gives out TF2 beta is beyond me.

Half-Life 2: Episode 3 is still in production and we've no idea when it will be announced for release. :(

As for TF2 Beta, it isn't the original beta any longer. Not so long ago they opened up the new TF2 Beta and every now and then they re-open it for more users to join. Similarly they have a CS:S Beta. Basically, they are builds of the game to test new functionality and see what the beta testing players think of them. If they are successful and liked then they get planned for release into the main game. So, why does anyone bother with TF2 Beta? To get an earlier look at what Valve are planning to put into the game.

HL2 Deathmatch is free, you just have to know where to look:

If you have an nVidia card click this link:
http://www.steampowered.com/nvidia/
If you have an ATI card click this link:
http://www.steampowered.com/ati_offer1a/

Have you played it? It was basically a tech demo to try out dev commentary and new water and HDR effects. The single level can be beat in 10 minutes. It's not openly advertised for a reason because there's not much there to begin with. It's a neat little demo though.

Whoa! Thanks! I never would have found that :D

...is that listed on the game pages or something? I've never seen it.

Dangit, I feel gypped. I was totally confused. Half-Life 2 Episode 2 isn't the second part of Half-Life 2, it's the second Expandalone. To actually play through I have to buy TWO more games, the actual Half-Life 2 and then Episode 1.
