Impossible Creatures

A lot of fun but the spike just killed me. I got as far as the second to last mission and I was toast.

No matter what I put up they smashed it to pieces in seconds.
Last weekend I started playing Silent Hill: Homecoming but had to quit after just a few seconds. As always, the first thing I do when starting a new game is go to the options menu and invert the Y axis. Because, well, that's the way I played games since forever. There was an option that said something like "Invert aiming". So I ticked the box and started the game, just to find out immediately that it literally only inverts the axis when in aiming mode, but not the basic camera controls!

That is some bullshit. I did a quick internet research and it turns out a lot of people complained about that but Konami never bother to patch such an option into the game. They just didn't give a shit. Wow.

That makes this game unplayable for me. Good thing I bought it second hand so Konami didn't get any money from me.

Don't worry, even with that option Homecoming would be unplayable.
Jagged Alliance 2. I just can't seem to get into a good groove. I tried messing with the difficulty settings and I somehow made it too easy, and there doesn't appear to be a way to reset to defaults. I'm going to have to reinstall the thing and backup the game folder. I'll probably try again eventually but on expert level with some of the difficult settings tweaked downward a bit. The other problem is that I wasn't happy with my merc combination. I don't like my medic and radio operator mercs. Perhaps I'll make my imp merc a radio operator / squadleader and go for Cynthia "Fox" Guzzman as my medic. I'll continue with my other stalwarts though: Grizzly, Barry, Reaper and Shadow.
Actraiser. Screw that final boss fight!
I tried playing Kotor 2, but eventually quit at the start of the middle section. Main reason was it got on my nerves how verbose and pretentious it was. Chris Avellone's writing just about worked in Planescape Torment (though even there it was a bit much at times), but I really ran out of patience with it in Kotor 2.
Also played Starcraft 2: Legacy of the void...almost finished it but didn't play through the last three missions (even though I had finished both Wings of liberty and Heart of the swarm...actually quite enjoyed Heart of the swarm). Got eventually bored by the mission design, and the story sucked really badly...pretty much killed my interest in the Starcraft universe.
Bound by Flame
played on the hardest difficulty and the game just became a dick in the last bossfight.

Let me tell you a little bit about it. So first you need to grind. There's no way you're ever going to do anything unless you have health potions and crossbowdarts and traps. So the first time I went there I didn't know about this so 9 darts and 4 potions was a nogo for me. I had to reload from a save that was before the final section because you can't go back from there.
After some grind I was ready with about 25 potions 100 darts and some traps. Now here's how the fight goes. The final boss either drops white glowing mines around himself and then shoots the same kind of projectiles at you. You get hit once and 60% of your health goes down. He fires the white fireballs according to your movement so if you stand still for a bit then the spread is not so wide so it's easier to dodge. During this thing is best to shoot darts at him because melee is a no go because of the mines around him, or you can set up traps over the place for later.

Another thing he does is leaping at you from all across the arena, distance is of no importance, and slashes at you with melee. If you get hit you're basically dead on this difficulty. Now the thing about this game's melee is there's two modes to it - the heavy stance with a twohanded axe/sword/hammer and the ability to block, and the ranger stance which is two daggers and the ability to dodge. Blocking with the heavy stance = death, however dodging with the ranger stance is really easy. You just have to remember not to get greedy and priorize running away from his melee after the dodge and not trying to score some cheap melee hits because his nonleaping melee is a bit unpredictable and you could die easily.

On the hardest difficulty you deal very little damage so you'll fire quite a lot of darts and stuff until the boss reaches halfpoint of his health. This takes a lot of time which means higher probability of some little slipups during the fight which are rather deadly on this difficulty.

So now that we're at 50% of his health he summons a fucking dragon out of nowhere! The dragons sits over the boss and either fires white fireballs with more accuracy than the boss and they explode leaving a deadly fire patch there for a couple of seconds. Then he breathes fire all over the place, you're either somewhere completely else or you're dead. What you need to do is shoot his legs and his head. Again, melee is no option here, that's what you need your fireballs for and your 100 darts. The legs are easy because he doesn't move them. The head however is flailing back and forth and side to side so it's only hittable when he kinda leans forward for a moment and keeps his head still. Not too hard to do these three tasks but again a lot of ways to die because of a stupid mishap.

After you hurt the dragons legs and head he leaves again. Another thing that happens at the exact same moment is the boss getting out of his trance and leaping at you without any warning, again distance is of no consequence here, so the first time you just die because you weren't expecting it and your character was probably blocking your view anyway.

Now that the boss is running around again the same thing as before goes on, but a couple of moments later you find out about the new surprise. The dragon is not dead or gone. He's flying around the arena shooting explosive fireballs leaving fire after the explosion. You need to use target lock in this game or you're not getting anywhere, especially if you need to use ranged attacks, so you're locked on the boss all the time and you can't possibly watch what the dragon actually does. Therefore you need to move around even more but mostly you're just postponing the time when you get hit by a sideline fireball you couldn't see or step into the fire and die.

And if you take too long then no matter what the boss' health is, the dragon just sits down and you have to go through the legs/head destruction again.

And that's when I just gave up, after about ten tries. Ten tries might seem too few, but as I mentioned before, you do very little damage and getting the boss to half health takes about 10 minutes alone.

TLDR
I gave up on a game that was hard on the hardest difficulty but manageable up until the final bossfight which was just pure trolling.
Drive Club (PS4)

It actually seems pretty decent and I'd like to play it all the way. It came with the PS4. But...I just can't drive a car with anything other than a steering wheel. Once you play driving games with a steering wheel controller, there's never any going back. So it's not the games fault that I don't have a PS4 wheel. And really, when it comes time to invest in a decent new wheel, I'd be getting one for Xbox/PC rather than PS4/PC as the combo of Forza 5, Forza 6 and Forza Horizons 2 is > Drive Club.

So for now, it's back to driving games on 360 and old PC racers.

Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy: too clunky, too point'n'click, visually didn't age well and far too many crashes to desktop. I wanted to do all the Sherlock Holmes games in order, but there's now way I would like to inflict such pain on myself. I want to play, not to suffer.

I have a daydream where I rescue all the Konami properties like they're the children of abusive and neglectful parents.

Anyways you did yourself a favor. The story and gameplay are terrible and it marked the death of the franchise.
Wizardry 8

This is an RPG set in a 3D world but still using phase-based combat (which is a good combination in my opinion). It’s also fairly hard, many of the enemies are very tough and are better avoided than fought (which is also awesome).

Unfortunately however I found that there are two different parts to this game: one is fun, the other is not.

When this game is good and very fun is when you’re exploring interesting areas: finding treasure and secrets, meeting NPCs, and fighting monsters (I don’t even mind the random encounters in these areas).

When this game is bad is when you're travelling through the wilderness: nothing to do except fight (or try to avoid) group after group after group after group after group after group of tedious and annoying random encounters as you are trying to get from one interesting place to another. You can try to avoid some of these encounters by using the environment to hide from them, but this is not always successful and then when you need to rest up afterwards there is a chance your rest will be interrupted by another encounter!

Overall I found there was too much of the tedious wilderness and not enough of the interesting areas :(.

I also found the magic system a little annoying: at low levels (and for hydrid casters) the spells fizzle and backfire with annoying regularity. This can be overcome with grinding “fake combat” and casting spells “just for practice”, but that is incredibly tedious to me as well, definitely not fun.
Bloodnet

Simply atrocious. Straight up broken. I don't think I ever quit a game this fast.

Interesting note; these guys went on to do "Hell A Cyberpunk Thriller" and "The Black Dahlia".

Dead Bits (PC)

While I technically didn't quit it, I literally rushed through it to say I've beaten it but the rush was so quick, it was almost as if I quit after the first level or two. I did quit it multiple times during this process though.

Dead Bits serves as one of the examples of what is wrong with crap games being shoveled onto digital marketplaces. This is also one of those games that is desperate as all hell to get attention. Freebie giveaways and incredible discounts.

I actually got banned from it's discussions page on Steam because I literally voiced on how it was a bad game and all that. They don't take criticism too lightly there. Just half-assery of a game at it's finest.
I may come back to it, but for now I'm quitting Victor Vran.

Reached lvl 24, the fight against Apocalypse in the main quest. Real issue is that my setup (and more importantly, good drops) all favor a close-in fighting style (grenade launcher, scythe), and this fight just isn't doable for that.

Options seem to be:
1) Keep smashing my face against this fight and hope to catch a break (or, less likely, very significantly improve my skills),
2) Go out and farm gear and hope for RNG.

Not particularly fond of either. In another game I'd try and grind out a few levels and come back, but levels here really aren't that meaningful compared to gear. I'd only died once previously, very early in the game, and often was more bored than threatened slowly kiting/dodging/pecking away at mobs health.

So this fight was a bit of a smack in the face, but having read a few tips online, and assessing what I have to work with from drops, it seems...possible...but unlikely to beat it with what I have to work with.
The Legend of Kyrandia (Book One)

I started out enjoying this game a lot. It’s got nice graphics, funny dialogue (although I did turn off the voice acting), funny death scenes, and I found the navigation and UI to be very easy and intuitive. But then I got the gemstone puzzle. If there is any way to complete this other than random trial-and-error then I missed it. Nevertheless, I persevered and continued on only to encounter the Fireberry Cavern maze. WTF?!? This one not only requires random trial-and-error, it also *requires* dozens of save/reloads. I got part way through the maze and realised that I was not enjoying this game anymore. I decided to consult a walkthrough just to get through the maze, but as I was following the walkthrough I realised I disliked doing that as much if not moreso than blundering through the maze myself. So I decided to quit, it’s simply not worth it to me if this type of ‘puzzle’ is so common in this game… and if I use a walkthrough, then what’s the point of playing it. Pity.
