Xenonauts
On veteran, and it was one hell of a ride. Spoiler warning for the final mission: The final mission is simple but deadly. You have an effective time-limit in the form of reapers (extremely deadly alien melee shock troops) that will start to storm the bridge of the alien capital ship after an X number of turns. You have to kill the high praetor but what makes it interesting is that it is a suicide mission unless you take a detour and destroy two power cores. The reason being that you won't have time to do that after you killed the praetor because by then the reapers will have started storming the bridge, and you need the power cores destroyed in order to activate the alien ship's escape pods needed for escape. This all makes for an incredibly tense and exciting final mission.
Unfortunately the reapers started to storm the bridge before I could clear the room adjacent to the high praetor's throne, which forced my soldiers to charge ahead into the final alien position (reapers are incredibly deadly). Col. Evans at that point had managed to flank a bunch of the aliens through a hidden side passage, a small utility corridor of sorts, and had put himself into a position to peek into the room with the high praetor. Col. Sharp was the first soldier to get a clean shot on the praetor as everyone barged into the room and managed to wound it badly, but was punished in the next turn by mind control from the praetor itself.
With the rest of my soldiers falling like flies to the reapers that had managed to catch up to them, the mission seemed lost. However, Col. Evans' guardian angel decided to save him one last time by giving him one more turn of life. A reaper had charged at Evans, but ran out of action points before it could deliver the killing blow. Evans had a choice: kill the reaper and avoid a gruesome death, or barge into the throneroom and unload his MAG Storm]MAG Storm[/url] onto the Praetor. Evans chose the latter, shredding the high praetor to pieces, releasing Col. Sharp from its control and saving humanity in one fell swoop. Evans payed dearly for his selfless sacrifice and was promptly mauled by the reaper in the next turn. Now the only soldier left alive, Sharp made a beeline for the escape pod, leaving the alien capital ship to its now doomed fate.
Here's to you Col. Douglas Evans. You were the most experienced and decorated soldier the xenonauts had, but that wasn't enough. You just had to add a +1 to your already unmatched killcount by killing the high praetor itself, your parting gift to humanity as it turned out.
