tinyE: Doom 3

Do I really want to fuck with the expansion? I am so sick of shooters now, because that was loooooong!!!!!

GameRager: It's pretty decent for an expansion...although i'd say steer clear of the BFG version. They cut some arcade machines/etc in the BFG version of the expansion.

Also: The second expansion the lost missions is semi-decent(the BFG only expansion), but they reused alot of art/graphics assets in that one and it's kinda short.
The BFG is what I played, and I loved it, other than how long it was.

The BFG main game is fine, but some arcade machines were cut in the BFG version of resurrection of evil due to legal concerns.

They ruined the BFG edition with the ammo pickups.

For the Lost Mission add-on they dramatically increased the amount of ammo you pickup from each individual pickup. Either due to laziness/oversight or wanting to make the base game and expansion dramatically easier they didn't fix the amount of ammo you get in the base game.

It did some good sgtuff, though, to be fair.....like adding flashlight/gun dual usage, and proper widescreen. But yeah, it also messedf up some stuff.

(Also the BFG classic doom games have censored bits like the red crosses on the 1st aid kits/etc and the nazi levels being stripped bare of symbolism because I guess it triggers some people & they wanted to sell to germany.)

That wasn't a good thing. Doom 3 was intended to be atmospheric and tense. Having to swap out a weapon for the flashlight, no matter how unrealistic, added to the experience.

Yeah one of the few good things though.

This again goes back to the laziness of the pack. They couldn't even be bothered to give American gamers the non-censored version.

Sloppy and pathetic release only worth it for the exclusive content like the Lost Mission and the Doom 2 expansion No Rest for the Living.

Please note I'm highly critical of this 'definitive edition' because I'm a huge fan of id Software and Doom 3. I've spent an embarassing amount of time with Doom 3 and the BFG Edition is an insulting joke with 6 problems for every positive.

By good I meant subjectively good, and good to me in my case.

True. But to them it wasn;t worth the time to simply patch the german/etc versions they sold.

Also add the lack of official mod support for the BFG version to the sh*tpile, btw.
DEEP SPACE WAIFU WORLD

Yeah, another iteration of the formula... since recently I can't seem to have enough time to play long full-fledged games, I have to settle for short ones. But still it's good, even if, bascially, when you've played one game of the series, you've played them all.

Anyway, it was fun, the "art" was good, so that's the most important, after all!

Fair enough. I always hated all the complaining about the flashlight situation as Doom 3 actually made me tense and part of that was the flashlight mechanics.

The Xbox port of Resurrection of Evil removed the flashlight, and instead attached one to the pistol. Interesting how there has been three variations of Doom 3 flashlights in official releases.

I always hated having to keep switching between the flashlight and the gun when shooting in dark areas...it became a slight exercise in frustration sometimes.

Falllout IV on Survival Mode it took me since release 4 F*cking YEARS to finish. talk about drawn the F*ck out.
Finished The Swapper.
Not a bad story w/ a decent ending(went with the escape option), platforming puzzle difficulty ramped up throughout the game, and not going to lie, used walk-throughs/youtube clips to finish the last 5 out of 7 platform puzzles in the Swapper. Most annoying puzzle in the game for me was the 4 switch/4pillar anti-gravity puzzle.

Now that you mention that, I hated that one, too. Every puzzle game has that one that is just a total pain in the ass to get through.

That reminds me of the end sections of Headhunter 2(ps2)...the beginning/middle areas are challenging yet fair and save areas are spaced out evenly, then at the end of the game you have to dodge lasers/enemy attacks/etc for 5-10 minutes with no saves, and it's pretty easy to get game over. When games pull that kind of stuff I just want to toss the controller/mouse aside and play something else.

Agreed. Puzzle platformers usually break through my utter disdain for platformer style games. Most annoying puzzle I've never beaten is a real-time segment in Mr Robot (the 2007 robot platformer/jRPG) that involves jumping and multiple raised platforms that are also moving tracks going in different directions. It sucks because I am 95% finished in the game and just need to get past that room to do the final boss fight.
NieR: Automata (XB1X)

This one joins the Souls games as the great modern examples of video games- especially Japanese ones. It is a masterpiece that had me hooked with its gameplay, world and story- yes all three in one game! My all time favourite Sci Fi writer is Asimov with his Robot and Foundation stories and this game touches on those themes in a lot of places.

It's an odd game, it's main gameplay is over the shoulder/behind 3rd person but it feels more like playing a twin stick shooter instead of a regular shooter or brawler. That's because you're teamed up with a support pod that supplies ranged fire that you control with the right stick, completely unrestricted to your movement with the left stick. Regular close up melee feels like DmC or maybe even Platinum's other big game Bayonetta. Then that is mixed, on the fly, with vertical scrolling shoot em up, top down twin stick shooter segments and even the occasional side scrolling bits. And the great achievement is that the switches never feel jarring and always keep the same controls.

The world is semi open and is a world where civilisation is long destroyed and populated by warring machines and Androids (which you play as). It's atmospheric and the graphics are exceptional- especially on an Xbox One X. All helped by a very smooth frame rate, that as far as I could tell never dropped- though I was using free sync which could be covering up minor drops. The music is some of the best and always seems to tie to what's going on in the world.

There are 36 possible endings that will bring you the credits! But most are bad endings- you can remove you OS chip right at the start, killing yourself and getting the credits within a minute. The first proper ending is not really the end. Restart your save and you play the same story but from the point of view of the other main character- a bit like the Ada Wong missions in Resi 4. Finish that play through and restart from the same save and you get the conclusion story that follows on and brings with it some awesome story reveals. After that you can start an actual NG+ and do it all again. That's currently where I sit, it's finally time to put it aside for something else.

Levelling brings only passive bonuses. All your character building comes from upgrading your weapons and pod, and choosing what expansion cards to install. All of this can be mapped and swapped out for different situations. It's a great system. I felt comfortable with an ultra healing build that, by the end, made me pretty much invincible (I could passively out heal most enemies DPS) but resulted in low ranged damage - making some bosses very long affairs. But you can load expansion cards to suit any play style you prefer, all out damage to safe healing and defence and anything between.

Give this game a try sometime. Despite excellent reviews, it seems destined to be one of those games that not many people play for some reason. I just hope it has a sequel being worked on. As already mentioned this joins the Souls games as my greatest games of the modern era of video gaming.
