So, if you are reading this, its because you are getting slow downloads through GOG Galaxy... there is a way to fix it!

Firstly, you need to know that the downloads won't be done through Galaxy, but instead through your favourite (or fastest) internet browser. So go ahead and launch that now. I'm using Google Chrome. Now, for some reason, Galaxy shows I'm getting the right download speed, but doesn't actually download that quick. Chrome does, and so should your browser. E.g. I should have 350 KB/s, and Galaxy shows that, but doesn't actually get that speed. So go to gog.com/account in your browser and now you should see all of your games. Sign in if needed. From here, you can download your games. Do that, and once done, run the setup file. You notice that it has finished faster than it would do through Galaxy! Now, open Galaxy and click the big round button that says 'GOG com', and choose 'scan and import folders'. Browse to where you just installed to the game to, and import it. Finished! Now, you have installed your game/s quicker, but still have them in Galaxy!
Thoughts? Tell me what you think, and if this worked for you.

Even better way: don't ever install galaxy, use perfectly good browser.

Exactly. I never used galaxy and downloaded all my games with my browser. Works perfect.

Note that with Galaxy already installed on your system, you may as well download the Classic, aka Correct, installers instead of downloading an extra 150 MB or so for each those titles with Galaxy dumped into the new and 'improved' installers

or you could just leave Galaxy on and then use the broswer to download games. Galaxy will most likely scan the folder ya have your games installed if there are any Galaxy-related files and automatically add it and then just use it as an updater.

It's annoying that it doesn't track but besides that, it works for me.

Would be even better if Galaxy was fixed as there is no good reason for it to give you a slower speed than your web browser.

my galaxy downloads perfectly fine with 13 MB/s so i can't complain here ^^. And for me the displayed speeds are also the real speedcounts (duration of the download fits the displayed speed) . Downloading in Browser compared to Galaxy is exact the same duration for me so browsers having faster download speeds aint an universal occurence.

Exactly. My speeds are great in Galaxy, perfectly in normal range for my connection. I pretty much get the same speed I get in Steam.

I also find Galaxy to be a lot more reliable than using the browser. I regually get file access errors, etc. using a download manager like DownThemAll on FireFox. On Galaxy though, I rarley get issues downloading and it does a very good job of picking up where it left off if the connection drops. Even if one wants a "classic" non Galaxy installer, I would still recommend using Galaxy to get it via backups and goodies.

Seeing as I queue up a lot of games and download them when I sleep, I need something that is reliable. But to each their own.

Most people don't use the forum, and this is turning into a let's hate on Galaxy thread (how original?). I doubt many people are having speed issues, and if they are it's probably localized to the CDN being connected to not a universal Galaxy problem.

Do you like want a cookie or something? I can only share *MY* experience, and in my experience Galaxy is much better at handling dropped connections (which many of us deal with) than a browser even when using a popular download manager. If you have a really good connection that never drops out, then more power to you but typically that isn't true for most people.

The fact that you view Galaxy as bloatware shows you have no idea what bloatware actually is. Galaxy is far from bloatware, rather if you like clients or not.

But don't let your preconcieved notions (however misguided they are) let that stop you from telling anyone who will listen to you what you believe to be true.

No, I think everyone is aware of your need to make this store into a steam clone. Galaxy is bloatware, it does nothing that your computer cannot do without it, other than gimmicks like achievements.
The fact that you view a client as necessary shows your pre-conceived notions that one is needed at all, funny since they haven't been around that long.
Still, your right, pointless discussing it, you and your ilk have destroyed this site, the endless stream of shovelware which requires a client for half the game to work, or for endless patching, or for "achievements" certainly has improved everything. I am sure once gog change their name to steam you will move onto the next promising site with these improvements.

To the op, I take it all back, you should of course install a client for every single shop you want to use, it is imperative to having a working computer.

I have no desire for GOG to make Galaxy a clone of Steam or for GOG to turn into Steam. I do have a desire for GOG to make Galaxy better than Steam and to do new things that Valve has not done before. It many ways it IS already better than Steam but how would you know that if you refuse to even try it or give it a chance. You critize something you have no experience with using.

I also do have a desire for people that want a Steam like experience on GOG to be able to get that if they want it. You will never hear me criticize you for using Galaxy no more than you will hear me criticize you for not wanting to use Galaxy.

I have never criticized you for not wanting to use Galaxy. That is always your choice. I have critized your need to share your biased views against clients in an attempt to influence what people use rather than letting them determine what is best for them.

If someone had an issue with standalone installers I would do my best to help them, and only offer Galaxy as a secondary means so that have full view of their options. You, however, if someone comes in with an issue on Galaxy... your first instict is to tell them how bad clients are and why they should not use them. You have no desire to help solve the actual issue, your "help" is infuencing them to think like you do.

I don't view a client as necessary. I view it as an added benfit. I have played games on PC long before Steam or GOG even exsisted. I do believe though that Galaxy benfits me in how I like to play games. I used GOG long before Galaxy existed and found the experience okay and usable but always felt like it was missing what Galaxy provides.

About two weeks ago, I run gogrepo.py update and got about 78 GBs worth of updates (hadn't run it in a while). With my ~13Mb/s line, that would mean a few days worth of downloading (and probably saturating my line). Using gogrepo.py to download means that the downloading computer would have a saturated line and be unable to do anything else on the internet, and if I canceled the gogrepo.py download command, I would lose whatever progress the current file(s) had.
Downloading the files through the browser would mean that I could only download while on the computer, and that I'd may have to deal with interrupted downloads as well (not to mention the potential issue of 1 thread downloading or saturated lines without the ability to pause again).
Galaxy did allow me to spend ~10 minutes queuing up everything to be downloaded, then only having to pause and resume the downloads as needed so I could still surf without issues and keep downloading while not using the computer. Yes, this is something I could do without Galaxy, but I would compare it to taking a backup by copying every single file individually instead of copying the whole folder at once.
So while Galaxy may not be something you personally find useful, it doesn't mean it doesn't have its uses.

P.S. For someone that dislikes achievements as much as you, I did chuckle with your post #11.
