zeogold: Otherwise, it's a big guessing game because anybody can say they're anything and there's nothing you can do to dispute their claim.
I disagree. Part of the thrill of playing for me is using different methods to figure out what roles and mechanics are in play. I have mostly been vanilla, and yet I find things to be decipherable most of the time to one degree or another, and that is a HUGE part of the interest / intrigue for me. Sure, never with certainty until flips are made (and even then, not
always!) or you yourself are able to get information (because you are scum or PR of somesort.) Not knowing everything allows the game to unfold interestingly potentially (as long as it is handled well, I think the key to the games is moderating, not the setups necessarily [a good mod won't use a bad setup, is also the idea]), and allow for richer flavor, among other benefits to it (games becoming stale, predicable, or generally just having less interest because everything is known.) But then it becomes a game of logic and likelihoods and what makes sense on multiple levels that I find to be a blast, and a lot of that is removed by knowing the entire setup and roles. Also, everyone knowing everyone's business is not logical, how do I know if the people I'm stuck in a train with, or in a bar with, are doctors, cops, serial killers, or what. It is an interesting and valid element for so many reasons.
I also know, from my hosting perspective, unless the setup specifically warrants / is suited for / works with an open setup, it is more interesting for me as a host to not have everything known. (which reminds me, if I've not said before, or even if I have, that I will not be wanting to share the PMs from my game, so that when if ever I host again and people choose different roles, or not, the PMs I send out will be of greater interest and add a more replay-value shelf-life to the setup that could be / I hope to be quite long.)
I think the open setups we've had here have simply been well-crafted and handled by the mods, and that the fact that they have been open isn't what has been inherently "better" about them. Here and in the championships, which have shown to have some very good moderators from what I have been able to tell.
