Personally digging the hell out of what I've seen of Ghost in the Shell, why not Scarlett Johanson, she's hawt. Asian or not who gives a damn, she can hold a big screen.

I think it's wrong to think of a new adaptation as a remake. Yes, there were other adaptations before, but the basis for the new movie is the book, not any of the previous movies.

What about those that choose to do so? Some of us actually enjoy them.

They better keep KJA and Bobo out of it and stick with the source material. If they can't make a trilogy, it's probably just as doomed of a project as Lynch's. There's a reason why he resorted to incessant whispering to keep up the exposition. Even then, it wasn't always there. Like, the scene where Paul has to kill Jamis in a duel. In the book, it's explained that Jessica doesn't want Paul to develop an appetite for killing, so she uses her understanding of psychology to imprint in him a sense of shame and guilt at just the right moment. In the Lynch film, this isn't explained so she just comes across as a cruel *****. There's so much nuance that's hard or impossible to bring into a 2-3 hour film. I like the atmosphere of the Lynch film but it failed as an adaptation and I don't blame him when he had such a short running time to work with. I do blame him for what he did to the Baron though.

This makes me very concerned about his Dune. I mean, I can hardly imagine a good Dune movie being anything but a very long, ambitious art-house kind of thing.

It's not a different director. "Alan Smithee" is a name used when the real director doesn't want his name associated with what has become of the movie.

And it's only worth a watch if one is desperately curious to know and see everything Dune. Otherwise it's pretty unbearable.

If you do not make it long, you need to cut off something. I hope they take part of the story then and concentrate on that instead of trying to fit it all in like Lynch did. That one must be a very confusing film if you have not read at least the first novel.

It's worth double checking the version. Spicediver made three versions The Alternative Edition in 2008, The Alternative Edition V2 in 2009 and The Alternative Edition Redux in 2012.

Until I watched Spicediver's third edit I was giving the TV miniseries the title as best Dune film adaptation. His third edit is vastly superior to his second in my opinion (I've never seen his first edit) and gives it the edge over the miniseries in my book. Honestly, I'd probably give the second edit a place over the miniseries too, but Lynch's literal interpretation of some stuff really rubbed me the wrong way.
