That's right, the temples in Populous 3 are primitive little huts compared to the advanced architectural achievement that is my asparagus temple!
Thanks, that's a good guess as there are similar temples in that game.
Theocracy sadly has fallen into obscurity, there is a wishlist for it on GOG with a measly 97 votes on it:

I realize that many people may have never heard about the game which makes things a bit unfair for this thread but I think with the added hint that it had something to do with mana, one could find the game by entering keywords into Google. If you search for "temple, Aztec, mana" and switch to an image search, you'll find this screenshot which leads to the game's wiki page:

Matewis: Is it perhaps Theocracy? It was posted by someone a couple of months ago in the "What is this game thread". There are aztec like temples that look like your food pyramid and their purpose as far as I know is to generate mana
