I'm currently playing this game again and I love it even more than before. One ship left to unlock and I almost finished the game on hard difficulty (it was added in advanced edition) with a Zoltan ship but I was destroyed during the last phase of a boss fight. Sigh... next time...

Guh, I am yet to even try it on hard. I am wimp.
Zoltan ship is my favourite ship. I am sucker for beam weapons and halberd combined with ion blasters is great thing to rip enemies apart.
Well, I would prefer to take over ships in close-quarter combat but almost always I screw it up and destroy ship with my units on board.

I've just won on normal and I'm so sorry that it wasn't on hard! I was so lucky with finding great stuff that during the boss fight my ship was literally indestructible! It was a Rock ship with four (!) missile based weapons, Weapon Pre-Igniter, Defense Scrambler and two Ion Intruders. So basically at the beginning of each phase he immediately (pre-igniter) got hit by 6 missiles and 2 ion intruders (first they make a breach and then ionize various systems) and he couldn't even dream about shooting them (defense scrambler). He only managed to hit me for 3 hull damage during the first phase because of a cloaking system. Other phases I won flawlessly! Wow! I've never felt so powerful in this game! (It's good that I hoarded so many missiles!)

Based on your previous statement I assume that you still don't want to draw? So guys and gals, the turn is free to take :)

Oh, and by the way - I've done it! I've beaten FTL on hard mode! :D:D:D

Congratulations, that's quite impressive feat.
Funily enough, I just came here after beating the game with rock cruiser on normal. Our previous conversation made me want to play it so I did. Although it was rocks I used combination of halberd, beam 2 ion blasters, and teleport. I only kept 1 rocket launcher as back up, for special ocassions but I rarely used it.
2 important moments were when I got Zoltan peacen convoy event and gained zoltan shield and when I destroyed enemy ship with my top notch boarding party (mantis and rock) and 2 beacons later I met slavers and managed to get rock and mantis from them. :-)
What is thte new flagship layout on hard that is mentioned in the thread you linked?
