Just played the first level and it's very good stuff, if you liked 2016. They made the "glory kills" and chainsaw stuff more required to get ammo and health, which I'm not a big fan of, but pretty much everything else is great. Combat is super fast, even faster than 2016, and as soon as you stop moving you're dead. God knows how console gamers play this considering the speed and accuracy you need, at least on the third difficulty setting. It's even faster paced than Amid Evil, a game designed to be a PC throwback.

The visuals are super impressive considering how well the game runs (100fps on a 2070, roughly). It's the art design that nails it though, so detailed and unique. It's not just a hellscape of a city, it also has crazy monsters in the distance, destroyed mechs and Mass Effect style AI advertisements. It's good stuff.

Anyone else playing?

I want to get it, but it's a bit too high priced for my liking right now. Plus, I already have such a huge backlog of games to play, and with work as it is, i just do not have the time anyway.

Saved for months and got it for XB1, actually(with a cutesy little lunch box thing).....gonna play it later maybe.

Wanted to buy it at an electronics store on release date, but since they closed, I had to buy it off of Amazon. *sigh*
I'll have to wait for about four more days until the package arrives... :/

Bought the PS4 version. It's on a controller, but hey, no Bethesda account, so that's a plus. :P


Edit: I don't know why and I surely won't complain, but the game just arrived. Installing it now. :)

Just like with Rage 2 it had a DRM free .exe on Bethesda's launcher. Also like Rage 2, I'd guess the Denuvo was just for review copies and they'll patch it out quickly.

And yeah they've made the glory kills waaaaaay more necessary in this one. Not sure how much it hurts the game for me yet, but it's not good.

I did those almost every other kill in the 2016 game, so hopefully it will be ok for me(it sucks for you and others, though).

I first played the original Doom on a IBM 386 running DOS 6.2 way back in the 90's. The default controls didn't use mouse input and the arrow keys were forward, backware, turn left, turn right. Strafe required using a button combination so I never did that. I played like a snail and would stop to turn to face each enemy before shooting. Somehow I still managed to beat the game on Ultra-Violence. Don't ask me how. I can't remember. I must have been really good using borked keyboard movement.

I know that I sound hugely oldschool with a very unpopular opinion aswell but the modern DOOM (2016 and Eternal) doesn't hold a candle compared to Project Brutality, which they took parts from to shape Eternal. Project Brutality basically is modern DOOM but with gzdoom as its engine, they improved the mod significantly in recent betas as well. Its a gargantuan effort by the doom community and several light years ahead of the next modern DOOM games already.

How id software out of anyone can make a modern DOOM game this unfun in comparision is kinda impressive and amazing together and even I think I wouldn't have such great skill in "unfunnying" things. Watching streamers play Eternal doesn't give the game a good impression. Its unfortunate, because DOOM 2016 looked kinda fun until I've started to play it. Modern DOOM is pretty meh but if that game becomes cheap I'd still recommend it if its sold for 15 or 20 dollars or so. The glory kill system is fun and the music and presentation is great. I just think that the gameplay is simply rancid balls at best.

On the other hand, someone should make Russian Overkill or Doom: Clusterfuck but with modern graphics instead. Now that would easily be one of the most sold FPS games since the Serious Sam series for sure.

EDIT: Sorry for the bitching its my german showing. But seriously try Project Brutality, its great. I also deserve those downvotes, its a small price to pay!

How is Project Brutality compared to Brutal Doom?

My understanding is PB is Brutal Doom + more guns + more monster types.

PB is more tangible than Brutal Doom and offers a lot more. For instance you can see your whole character (if you look down you can see your characters body). You can have martial arts combos, all those fancy new DOOM Eternal features are also inside the game. You can change the games physics to a FPS you like, you can have vanilla quake 3 physics with the gzdoom engine. You can climb ledges and have several modernized DOOM weapons. The monsters all look like modern DOOM demons, as well. The game also has its own version of glory kills (you can punch the demos and do fighting-game style combos on them), where brutalising enemies while there close to dying grants you health, so turturing the demons during their death can be very important. Its also all incorporated with the gunplay.

To give an example: You can run, shot an imp with the gun and then literally do a street fighter like combo with punching, kicking and using your arm-blade weapon. The gore in PB is much more refined than in Brutal Doom as well, which already is DOOM 2016 multiplied by 10 when it comes to the violence. Theres just so much care in anything that the mod offers and its fully customizable as well. So basically PB is like a very much updated Brutal Doom which lots of stuff that adds and compliments and improves on the the modernized DOOM experience that many people enjoy (even if I don't fully like it).

Theres lots of different and unique weapons, like a fireaxe (think of the axe from the movie American Psycho), that you can throw around and several different modern BFG types as well. Note that every weapon, kinda like with Brutal Doom, has its unique characteristics (some weapons were taken from Brutal Doom AFAIK, but I could be wrong).

I thought Doom 2016 was ruined by its save system and wasn't very good anyway and that its main USP (Glory Kills) was bloody stupid.

Now, about Eternal. Does it require anything other than Steam for single player? I have no interest in multi!

From looking at reviews it seems they doubled down on everything I hated about Doom 2016. Glory kills, Painkiller style arenas, and platforming sections galore. Apparently there are many cutscenes too, which I dislike in my oldschool FPS.

It's not even that they didn't have a launcher with Denuvo this time, it's that the released files included a folder named 'Original' that still included the drm-free exe...

I'm not one who cares about "graphics" but this game looks almost identical to 2016 Doom in terms of fidelity and texture quality, looks very budgety and not AAA.
