Disgaea allows you to grind till you drop, but doesn't force you - I've just recently finished Afternoon of Darkness (PSP), and it took me about as long as Chrono Trigger or Bloodlines - 46 hours, to be precise. It did *require* some grinding to level up near the end, as Disgaea isn't the most...tactical amongst tactical RPGs.

Did you defeat Baal, or did you just finish the main game?

No, main only. I started Etna's campaign soon after, but that's on the backburner for now, prinny Laharl notwithstanding.

I'd love to see NIS and Atlus both port most of their games to the PC. Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, Phantom Brave, ummm... that's all i can think of right now :P

Whenever I played Hour of darkness the only time I actually needed to grind is to bring non-main characters up to main's level. And that's really easy if you know what you are doing. Disgaea rewards exploiting everything you have. And if you don't grind too much the game can still be challanging in the final batle.

Interesting. Now if there were PC versions of Shin Megami Tensei games...

I remember beating the game at about level 80, which really doesn't take that long. There's also bills to make the enemies easier so grinding is less necessary if you don't care about power-housing.

Although to be truthful, i enjoyed the sequel much more than the original game; Minor issues they fixed, alternate endings, bonus characters, etc. :)

I liked the mechanics of the sequel better, but I have to say, the story of Disgaea hit me right in the feels. It was a surprise since usually I expect from J-SRPGs a story like FFT, Fire Emblem, or Tactics Ogre, which is just "OMG I have angst and will fight the enemy!"

Well i certainly enjoyed the first story. Felt a lot like going through an anime. Curiously the anime they made references the game but doesn't really give the feel...

The second game's story seemed like it was a lot more cohesive. But it's been years since i beat them both so maybe i'm looking through nostalgic goggles...
