GalCiv2 is a great 4x. Yes it's definitely worth trying :)

It's just that I swore to myself not to buy more 4X-Games as they are such a timesink and I don't know when to play them. But this was an offer I couldn't resist ;)

GC2 was a long, awesome experience. took me forever to go through to the end, but enjoyed it a lot.
lots of strategies, paths to victory, customization if one so desires. And the battles were quite fun.
