CarrionCrow: Stupid godsdamned quasi-rogue likes...really starting to get on my nerves.

Anyway...

Will just say good evening to everyone in one shot, rather than doing near-identical posts a dozen times.
Good evening, fine sir!

I see you are having fun. :-)

I have never been a fan of rogue like games, having to repeat levels over and over again would just bore me. I often wonder if some of the more interesting rogue like games would sell more if they include an ability to remove the rogue elements. Which I know would remove much of the point of the game, but it would not be too hard to do and it would open it up for players who like the game but not the rogue like elements. Or maybe not, I am tired and might just be talking nonsense. :-)
Endre, have you done any GOG/Android tinkering yet?

I managed to get Waxworks going, but there was no sound - I think that's more of a Waxworks problem than Dos/Android. Its a shame the same method doesn't work for all games; its a case, I think, of finding the most amenable games rather than being able to shoehorn whichever game you want to suit the task.

Still, I'm proceeding by trial and error, which is very often the best way.

j0ekerr: The logic behind that, comes from a short one testicled bastard with a falsetto voice some 70-odd years ago. So no logic at all.
I think they could always go worse. I'll take what little comfort I can get out of that.
I think this year I'm having a studious christmas.
I am glad to hear your studies are going okay, and at least not as worse as they could be. Hopefully you will have a little free time over Christmas to enjoy yourself.

EndreWhiteMane: I prefer mine fresh, in aquarium water, in the aquarium, where they BELONG! :-)

ddickinson: Exactly, or you know, in the wild? :-)

Hello, Mr Endre!

How are you this evening? Doing well I hope?
We don't have wild snails here sadly, not even in the water. Too cold in the winters.
Doing pretty well tonight, sorry your day isn't the best.
*big hug*

Have you already tried the scumm games?
ScummVM has an official android version.

Dungeons of Dredmor did that. It has the option to disable permanent death, among other options that I don't remember. Seems like a good idea to me.

Then again, I'm not entirely sure what a roguelike is... I kinda do, but, I'm bad at defining genres...

I tried a few earlier today from the command line, none worked well.
Either sound, video or controls were screwed up.
I think you are right, it's a matter of find ones that are suitable.

Well roguelike games appeal to a very specific kind of masochistic gamer...

Oh, lookie there!

Ishar 1 worked perfectly, both sound and video. Controls however... But I don't fault DOSBox for that, it's the fault of the virtual keyboard being utter shite. I was able to move about by assigning key bindings to the virtual buttons though.

There was however an issue, and it's that when on landscape mode, only the upper row of the virtual keyboard was responsive.

So no wild snails? I guess that means your area will be spared when the French invade, as they will only invade where there is food. Unless you have frogs, then you are still at risk. :-)

Glad to hear you are doing pretty well. How did your hospital visit go?

Thank you. I will be okay, just some sad news to go on top of everything else at the moment.

*big return hug*

I did not know that, but then rouge like games are not really something that appeals to me.

As far as I know, they are called rogue like (or rogue lite etc), based on an older game called Rogue. That is about all I know. :-)

I understand that, I get that it is for a certain type of gamer, but I just thought they could increase sales by adding a simple option to control how "rogue like" the game is. Probably not viable, but just something I always wondered as I have seen a few games over the years that looked interesting, but I was put of due to the rogue like elements.

I'm pretty sure two big things that make something a roguelike are 1) permanent death, and 2) randomly generated levels. I'm pretty sure there are more features that make something a roguelike, but I don't know what they are.... I dunno. I give up on trying to classify games. I'll just play whatever looks fun instead :-)

Oh yeah, boatloads of it at this point.

Would say it depends on how well the mechanic and overall progression are handled. If it's done badly, it might as well get ripped out entirely, since it's just annoying then.

They also seem to favour a retro style to the graphics as well.

That sounds like a good idea for picking games to play.

Well there is the Berlin interpretation which defines a roguelike (for some reason i tend to spell it rougelike ^^)
