Yay, I'm awake again. Kind of.

Stilton: Wow, you kids are young.....
Nah! It is us who are old. :-)

Stilton: Wow, you kids are young.....
Yep. 71 years young, and I can feel that youth coursing through my veins every day.

-laughs- I tend to think life is good as opposed to any particular period of it. Childhood, youth, middle age, old age, they all have their splendours and naff bits. Its the bigger picture that matters, and filling it with plenty of colour, regardless of what age you happen to be :-)

That's the attitude :-)

-laughs- I can't even imagine living to that point.

OK, grandpa, how about these pen and paper things. Where's the best place to start? Is there some kind of oracle to read?

Hmm. Depends on what you want to play. There are games for pretty much everything.

Something classic, dungeons and dragons-ish, bit of folklore and badgers with tambourines, that sort of thing.

Well, there's always the actual Dungeons and Dragons. They came out with a new version about a year ago.
Just looked, and this page has free copies of the basic rules, so you can check them out before committing to purchases.

For that page, you'll want both the player's basic rules and the dungeon master's.

No idea how much previous knowledge you have about tabletop RPG's in general, will ask before going into detail about stuff.

That's great. Should start me off well, thanks :)

And a new wave of thrills and excitement is nearly upon us....

You're welcome. =) If you read through the stuff and find it interesting, I'd suggest going from that to the D&D 5th Edition Starter Set. It's a basic version of the game, only with things you'll need like dice and what-not.
Not sure how the prices are for you, but here, it's a little less than half the price of a single full rulebook. It's a much lighter commitment financially than spending 30 dollars apiece, times the three main books for D&D.

You'll need at least one person besides yourself. There are players, and there's the dungeon master.

The dungeon master is the referee of the game. They set the stage, design the plot, play as the monsters in combat, and act as every non-player character. When the players are talking to everyone from the bum in an alley, to the local king, it's all the dungeon master acting out those roles.

The players are, well, players. They make characters, go on adventures, all the standard RPG stuff. (If they don't end up being killed in some stinking dungeon, lost and forgotten.)

Additional - It's time...

-laughs- Thanks, something to smile about. This really is a non event event. At least they're going to give everyone the opportunity to sort through and see what they really want, but overall it just...its....completely without zazz.

And that explanation of Dungeons and Dragons has got me wanting to have a go. It looks really involving, plus its good old-school sit around a table and communicate gaming, which has to be good.
