I'd say yes with two caveats.

Make it a small dog, but not too small.
Make it a pooch, no pure breeds.
The Whys:
Smaller dogs are easier to care for by a small child. Very small dogs are more rats than dogs, and usually, nervous wrecks.
Pooches save you money on vet bills.
You are a wilderness thriving viking so I assume you have a big house with lots of space for the pooch to run amok and tire itself out.
If you force her to actually care for the pet, she will learn responsibility.

And the most bestest reason.
Dogs are superior to cats

Well, technically speaking there are shelves lined up against the wall, and the router is on the highest shelf ... So maybe if he jumped up onto the lowest shelf and then made his way from there? But the shelves are really crowded so that would be hard. :P And the cat spends plenty of time in the pantry (he likes it in there) and I've never seen him attempt to climb the shelves. But then again, he does love to climb the shelves in my room.

If you don't mind walking it in the morning, the evening, the rain, the cold, on Sunday morning ... yes! I love my mother's dog, she's super sweet and she always manages to cheer me up. But on the other hand I'm really glad I'm not responsible for walking her and all that. And you have to keep in mind that you can't easily go on trips either unless you take the dog or find a dogsitter or something.

I think you know my answer! ;) Seriously though, I never planned on having a pet myself, but bringing a rescued pup into the family was one of the most rewarding decisions I've made. I would recommend a rescued animal first, but will also admit that part is subjective (I'd also adopt before having my own child, were the lady and I to decide to raise a tiny human as our own one day. So I'm biased on that part.)

There are some headaches involved, and I highly recommend training classes if you end up with a puppy or untrained dog (the training classes help the family more than the pup, I think... really helps you learn how to consistently train the dog at home, and helps immensely, leads to a much happier dog too) :)

Oh, and I asked Sarge, and he responded with a contented snore. I think that's a "yes." ;)

*Plus, as others have mentioned, it will give her a friend *and* teach her responsibility. I'm finally having to learn some of that myself, thanks to this guy. It really does help, gives you a good reason to want to learn to be responsible.

Just, think well about the responsabilities it involves, both for you (cost, as well when you'll buy it, than daily (food...) and in case he gets ill (vet costs) ; what about the holidays, trips, etc : will you take it with you ?... you'll have to train it maybe...) and for your mini V (she will have to take care of it, walk and feed it... not grow tired of it...). Is she asking for it for a long time, or is it a brand new wish ?...
If you're both sure about it, that's a great idea and company ! You'd just have to chose if you'd want it from a breeder (pedigree dog...), or from an animal shelter (not a newborn one, but one you want to rescue...)

Breeders are a BIG NO. Pure breeds are guaranteed to cost an arm and a leg in vet bils. A pooch, a healthy pooch saves you money there and are a lot cheaper, plus you save a poor dog from the animal shelter.
As a side note, animal shelters here are usually filled with very expensive pure bred greyhounds. They are bought by hunters at the start of the hunting season then abandoned afterwards. Many arrive in an extremely sorry state.
