As an example of religious indoctrination, my other half grew up in a very Christian household. Both of her parents were devout - every aspect of life was governed by god. My other half broke free from all this weight when she met me (I have no patience at all for parents who don't give their own children a chance to work out personal beliefs for themselves). I didn't see it as a personal crusade to 'snap her out of it' after we got together, that would've been as bad as her parents, but she was heading in that direction anyway and we shared views and she eventually broke away. She was an adult at the time; such was the weight of all that guilt and uncertainty that it took her that long to find the courage to make up her own mind and express what she honestly felt.

Then, when she became pregnant with our daughter, she wanted to tell her dad face to face rather than over the phone that she was pregnant. Her mother by this time had succumbed to cancer (nice one, god, thanks for that). So we drove down to his place and she nervously told him the situation. Now, the first thing is she was nervous about it. Nervous of telling her own father that she was expecting his first natural grandchild (my other half has a brother who is married and just as religious as their dad. He's adopted four kids because his balls don't work. A harsh way of putting it, perhaps, but he is one of the biggest shitheads I've ever met - a point I like making him completely aware of as frequently as possible).

So she tells her dad, and his first reaction is to say, 'Oh dear, oh no.' No thought, just natural impulse. Because we're not married and god won't approve. 'Oh dear, oh no' to his OWN daughter, who, unlike him, was very happy about the situation and wanted to share that happiness with him. I wrote the old arsehole off as a result of that, and he's another person I let know as frequently as opportunity allows that he's a blinkered, self-centred prick. Needless to say my other half was upset and cried. Her loving father's response was to condescend and tell her not to be silly. Complete shithead.

To me religion is incredibly destructive, it encourages monstrous ignorance and even denies children the love and nurturing they need. My other half's parents put her in that horribly uncomfortable place willfully.

To me this is complete inhuman madness.

EndreWhiteMane: Survived work nicely and now have a nice fresh hot coffee.
Life is good. :-)
Funny thing, my boss was talking about two clients that got into a religion based argument and how mad she got at them.
I told her I don't get mad at that, with all the shit people were taught as kids it's unavoidable.
A little later she told me I was right and she'd never thought about it that way.
Just seemed to fit with what you guys were saying today.

Agent, I want pics of that pumpkin! :-)
Glad to hear it. =)

Good point. When it gets drilled into your skull before you're able to analyze fully and think for yourself, odds are it's going to stick for a long time.

Making your own flesh and blood feel like shit because they didn't follow the rules set forth by your imaginary friend?

Why yes, that does sound fucking crazy. Feel free to let your other half know that random guy on the internet is sorry she had to deal with imbeciles who have no idea how to prioritize what's actually important.

That's the beauty of it all. Everyone talks, and the resulting cacophony works.

You might want to pass on that one. It might be too scary for your heart and nerves to handle...

Additional - Now audibly groaning as I look at all the book bundles I missed. It's a list of missed opportunity.
Sure, I probably didn't have the money to get them, but I would've tried. You only need one kidney, after all.

That poor guy. He looks very sad and confused. ;)
Nice job, not your usual look for a Jack O' Lantern.

Yes, that's what I've been looking at.

Depends on what you like. Horror, suspense, fantasy, western, cyberpunk. From there, I can at least mention what's come before that might fit. They've started doing what they call resurrections, bringing back old bundles, so there's always a chance that something missed could come back around.

I teared up a little from reading that :'-/
Just... dammit. I'm so sorry for you and your other half. That is awful. In a way, I even feel a bit sorry for her dad, being such a miserable shit that he can't even enjoy the announcement of his grandchild.

I always say "as long as it's not hurting anyone, I have no problem with religion." And I really mean that, but the truth is, I don't know of any situations where it has not been hurting someone, in some way :-\

Thanks for sharing.

I was just looking for something that would give me an idea how tabletop games work. Thought it might help understand the mechanics of PC games better.
Maybe D&D would be best?
