Playing Shovel Knight, and I don't know if this is what the developers were going for, but the mashup that makes me think of games like Castlevania and Mega Man just makes me want to play those while looking at Shovel Knight as having shortcomings because it's not those exact games.

I wish I was playing Castlevania since every time I use the shovel I can't help thinking its range is total garbage compared to the whip, and Mega Man keeps popping up in the sense that I want to be able to use the cool stuff the bosses have, but don't get to.

Guess that's a downside of getting for the nostalgia dollar. Some people might start putting your title up against what came before and viewing it unfavorably because of it.

Hating Ducktales when I was younger probably doesn't help a whole lot, either.

Super Castlevania 4 was good, but they did manage to tank the last fight for anyone who used to read Nintendo Power once upon a time. Once you knew how about the invisible staircase and the power-up deluge, the end was a joke.
