ddickinson: I think after DOW 1 they just started cutting corners. Dark Crusade and SoulStorm are just skirmish missions for the most part wrapped in a very sparse plot. DOW 2 was just them using their WW2 engine with a 40K skin which did not really work well. I am not saying DOW 2 is a terrible game, but the last one was just the same levels for each race, nothing different between any of the campaigns. Relic just got super lazy. DOW 2 was not really a RTS, as there was not strategy involved. It was all just rinse and repeat with your almost unstoppable squad.
I have played a little of Space Marine, and that looks pretty good so far. At least they seemed to put some effort into it.
Well, yes, as much as I enjoyed using necrons in Dark Crusade, the campaign was repetitive and the plot was paper thin. It felt too much like an excuse for a series of battles, pretty much like what you'd do for the tabletop game. I have played a little of Space Marine, and that looks pretty good so far. At least they seemed to put some effort into it.
Soulstorm was flaming shite.
I do enjoy the different game mechanics of DOW 2 but then that's maybe just me.
Space marine is a very solid and well built 3rd person action shooter. Not brilliant, but fun. And getting a bolter headshot on an ork feels extremely satisfying. Specially if you're close enough to see it clearly.
The multiplayer is meh. Nothing to see here.
Some people complained that the plot and story were cliched. But I thought they were perfectly adequate. You have an ork invasion of a forge world, Then you have a chaos invasion after that. And lots of shooty and choppy bitz in between, and even more afterwards.
Seems like a perfectly good story to me.
