EndreWhiteMane: Had to laugh when I saw 3TB, I'm playing Master of Orion 1 which weighs in at 23.6MB which includes DOSbox.
Amazing what devs can do when they have to. :-)
Star Ruler 2 is also only about 430 MB as download and about 550 MB when installed which was really surprising.

That always impresses me, anyone who can create a good game with that small a footprint is an excellent programmer.

Yes - but it seems that this kind of optimisation is getting really rare nowadays and the gamefiles are getting huge...

It is much easier to do sloppy work and let the customer make up for it.
Microsoft is one of the worst offenders so it's not just small devs.
As a matter of fact the small indie devs seem much better at writing efficient code.

CarrionCrow: It shouldn't be too expensive. Maybe 120 dollars for a 3 terabyte. That'll be more than sufficient to store everything I need to back up.

The saying "necessity is the mother of invention" comes to mind.
Designers couldn't bullshit a mediocre game into something great then.

Yes. That's definitely true. Interesting to see what Microsoft will mess up with Windows 10 although i'm actually looking forward to it.

But not all Indie developers devs are good at it considering the riddiculous specs for some pixel art games like 'Not a Hero' etc... but in general you're right. Maybe it's because they have to sell as many copies as possible to survive unlike the big AAA-publishers who don't give a damn about optimisation....

Actually I think many of them simply take pride in their work, the lazy one's just pick an inefficient engine and use it.
Many that you see high specs on are just a tiny game inside of a bloated and inefficient wrapper.

Very true. Let's see, downloads done, sale over, what are you going to do with yourself now? :-)

Play games, keep working on the side job I took, try to keep from being miserable all summer.
That's about it.

And watch more movies. Almost forgot that part. I can use Netflix again now that I'm not using all my bandwidth downloading.

Good point. That definitely might be an important part of the indie game development.

BTW: Because it's still on sale - have you played some Distant Worlds already?

I have not yet, I still have a few others ahead of it.
By the universally good reviews I don't think you can go wrong for that price though. If 4x in space is your thing.
