I never did care for anime, the teens thing would be even more off putting.
avatar
j0ekerr: Actually they were never adults, they were always teenagers, who might have aged a couple of years somewhere along the translation process. Remember Chrono Trigger? Chrono and Luca were just kids.

Nowadays that people cry artistic rape whenever any detail from the original is altered the ages are left as they were and we facepalm at these 15 year olds being saviours of the universe.

We get Batman, they get teenagers who use the power of FRIENDSHIP!

I think we got the better deal.
But some of the older RPGs had them older, some of the older Final Fantasy's for example. I think Final Fantasy 7 had mostly 20 something characters. But they did get younger, Final Fantasy 8 were teenagers, and FInal Fantasy 9 for me was ruined by the young characters. It's a nice game, but it annoyed me seeing all the kids in the game. Plus the best characters are always the older ones, such as Auron in Final Fantasy X.

j0ekerr: Five words: Tsukino Usagi, 14 years old.
Tsukino Usagi? I make it a point of never googling anything anime related that you suffest. Far too dangerous. :-)

superstande: Yeah sure, you are right. I think that is actually one of the most negative things about that game, so many young characters. And there's such a large collection of all kinds of games, so no point trying to force oneself to play games that are too irritating :)
Even my wife who doesn't mind cute graphics, said after trying to play it for a while, "I want to die now!" and quit :)
But then again I grew up watching anime and playing jrpgs along with western entertainment so it doesn't jump into my face so much....
avatar
ddickinson: I used to love watching anime, but quite a lot of it now is just young girls in slutty outfits . More and more are just young kids and teenagers, rather than adults like in the older anime. Even the ones with the adults are still full of kids or childish humour/storylines.
Ah, there I would have to agree, don't dig the slutty outfits either. I mean it just ruins the focus, even an interesting story loses its atmosphere when it goes porno. Yeah there's all kinds of anime... Ghibli Studio is something that I would love to see in the game world...
avatar
superstande: I'd guess the phrase, "It's an acquired taste," would fit here :p
In my case it's a taste I acquired long ago and claimed to be utterly delicious for years. Then gradually I realized that well, maybe it isn't that good after all, in fact it's rather bland and tasteless, actually all too often it tastes like raw sewage... Why the hell do I even keep drinking this? Oh right, I'm addicted now.

And sometimes you manage to find that delicious morsel that seems to justify wading through all the crap to get to it.

The big giant boobs are also annoying and just cheap eye candy. They don't even look right, petite women with giant boobs. You boys sure have strange tastes. :-)

The Studio Ghibli movies are very good, with some lovely animation and stories.

Lost in translation my dear DD. FF7 might be an exception with Cloud having a soldier's background, they couldn't make him TOO young, but he was still an exceptionally young veteran soldier. Most JRPG protagonist were usually teenagers to relate to their target audience. Blue dragon's main cast is composed of elementary school kids. And then there's the dragon quest series. And just how old is Link supposed to be?

You might have known her as Sailor Moon.

O-kay. By the way nice new avatar!
Yeah I'm not trying to say there's anything special in anime/jrpgs as such.
The only reason I keep returning there from western games seems to be when that's the place I find lots of childish humour and light-hearted characters the most easy way.
I think at least western rpgs are occasionally lacking in the humour department.
In other genres like point'n'click adventures I have zero complaints :)

Don't you mean a young grunt soldier who was experiment on to be a Sephiroth clone? He was never a veteran soldier, just a regular soldier who believed himself to be in SOLDIER. He tried to enter SOLDIER, but failed. It's only due to Professor Hojo's experiments that he was as strong as he is, because of the experiments with JENOVA and Sephiroth.

(Some of that could be wrong, it has been years since I played it.)

But you make a good point. You certainly know more about JRPGs and anime than I do, so you would know about the ages better than I do.

I was wading through batoto recently and found a manga with a character design... those weren't boobs, they weren't even sexy, they looked like overgrown tumours. Her design veered directly into uncanny valley and bungee jumped to the bottom without a rope. I kept reading though, for pretty much the same reason Crow kept playing through the pigeon game, out of hate and contempt. Never understimate the motivational power of spite.

Case in point about the delicious morsels that make the rest worthwhile. Spirited Away almost justifies everything else by itself.

You haven't? But it's the 90's anime!

I preferred Ranma.

I get big boobs on characters (who doesn't like boobs :-)), but when it's characters that look like children with big boobs, or the boobs are so large the woman wouldn't even be able to walk properly, it just seems so silly, especially on an anime or manga that is trying to have a serious storyline. The Japanese sure do have some design ideas for their characters. :-)

That is very true. But sadly many people have given up looking through all the crap to find the good ones. That is part of the reason I stopped, as I got tired of all the kid aimed shows. But I also hardly watch TV or movies anymore, so that is also part of the reason.

I liked Ranma more though.
I have not even seen a single episode. I am not sure if anime was that big in the UK in the 90s, or if I just didn't notice it. But there are lots of older shows that I have not seen, like Ranma, for example.
