pimpmonkey2382.313: Since the patents ran out on the NES and SNES in 2005, companies are allowed to make consoles that are basically nintendo or super nintendos on one chip. They basically clone the functions of the entire consoles in a single chip and you can play the original cartridges on them.

It's a game console itself just like an SNES or simular they hook up to the tv.. Only downsides are that they aren't 100% compatible with all games, I'd say about 97%-98%. Though with mods you can bump it up a little. But I knew that going in, and on a tight budget so being able to play NES and SNES in one system was awesome for me.
