Anyone have thoughts on the new release?
*spaceball salute* Hello Agent!

The Balrum thingy game? I glanced at it but it doesn't fit into my narrow interest niche. Could be interesting if it's up your alley though. Combining growing a village with RPG and dungeon clearing elements (right?) is something I haven't seen before.

ddickinson: I know, but some of the older games still look lovely. And there are even a few newer games with nice graphics that are also tiny in size. I think often the problem is that developers no longer need to optimise things, well, they should perhaps, but they know gamers will put up with anything so why should the care about optimising their games anymore.
It's true that developers don't seem to optimize their designs and gameplay as much. The new PC systems give
them some play in that. It is hard to make a game a visual masterpiece and keep it small as well. Image files
don't compress well. My own mod for BF2 grew to over 3gigs with added textures for vehicles and uniforms...

ddickinson: I thought we agreed on no more chair sleep? *shakes head*

It is sometimes impressive seeing how small the old games are considering how much they packed into them. I guess because they had to make them small, while today they don't need to care. A bit like how in the old days the games had to work, while these days that is not really needed always.

How is the Shadow of Mordor game? I have heard some mixed things about it.
It wasn't intentional. Still trying to stop doing it all together.

It's a totally different world, as far as making games goes. Shadow of Mordor is really big and has a ton of stuff. So the size does make sense. But games like Last Crusade show that good titles aren't required to be large.

Haven't played a lot of it, but it looks interesting so far. It'll take a bit to get the hang of it, it's close to Batman Arkham combat, but there are enough additions to add to the learning curve.

ddickinson: Good day, and a very nice flop into the thread. :-)

GhostwriterDoF: Those old games used to pack in 30 to 100 hours of gameplay, while today's large download games
might only be 6 hours, with very few pushing the 30 hour gameplay. :/

Hello DD and Ghostwriter!!

I always find that amusing too. My dad was last busy reciting the ancient pc's his own father owned after they first became available. He also recalled how the whole of his university had a "wooow" moment when they heard the libraries' pc's were being upgraded to 32 mbs of ram. :p

He even recalled a pc model that ran on casettes, and playing text-based star trek games over at a friend's

Dismissed, Spaceball :-)

What is your narrow interest niche then?

Sleeping in a chair, or sleeping altogether? I try to stop doing the latter about two days per week :-p

I am terribly sorry for leaving without replaying to you all, but I will be saying goodbye for the day. My partner is leaving work a little early and since we did not get much time together yesterday we are hoping to have a lovely evening today. So I need to get a few things done before she gets home. I will be sure to reply to any replies when I am next online, so my apologies if it seems rude to just leave suddenly.

Take care, everyone. And I hope that you wonderful people have a really pleasant rest of the day!

*hugs and waves*

The old mainframes I used to write programs for only had 8 megabytes of RAM...
I've even wrote programs on card-readers... :D

Space 4x strategy games like star ruler, space empires, sword of the stars, distant worlds, reach for the stars, ... and older real time strategy games that try something different rather than reflex game elements and the Dune formula. Like Kohan, Sudden strike, myth, supreme commander, and a few others.

I really play RTS mostly; that is to say, I enjoy other things too, such as the rare rpg (Morrowind, Stalker) and shooter (blood, Ghost recon 1). But it takes a lot of effort to get my attention and a lot more effort to keep it in place. :)

Good evening, oh Empress Owl. :)

The day is nice, the morning cool, but the heat of summer
in the afternoon will make the sweat pool... heh

How are things in the Owl Empire?

<big squishy (non-feather-ruffling) return hug>
