Good morning, lovely goslings of Fred!
I hope you are all doing well and that you all had a wonderful weekend?

[Limbo review/rant]
We played Limbo over the weekend, and I must say I feel like the game is a bit too overrated, and it is not the 5 star game so many claimed it is. In fact I thought it was a bit of a letdown after hearing such good praise. The game was just so dull, boring, and repetitive. The art style, while looking interesting at first, did get old very quickly, and I found that it felt a little lazy if I am honest. The backgrounds are all blurred, and there is the all too common noise filter applied to the whole game, probably to cover for the fact the art style is so basic and lacklustre. If it looked like it did on the artwork (with nice lighting effects on the character and the environment, not the plain black nothing we end up with), then it could have been nice, but as it is, it just looks lazy. The art style could work well, if some more detail and effort was put into it. And the character's movement was not that great, especially his jumping. Then there are the puzzles, which while some were nice, they do repeat the same concepts over and over again. You find a rope, move a box, drag a trap, die (often due to the art style making everything look the same, or due to the games mechanics causing you to die), then try again. I would say that none were hard technically, although the game's mechanics can make some puzzles annoying.
Your character is also apparently brain dead, you can see dangers but the game won't let you avoid them, you just have to walk straight into them. There is also no real story, or music, in fact the sound is very basic. Overall it felt like the game was a little lazily made, and relied on the whole "indie art" hype that so many indie games get over these last few years. The game is also only about 2-3 hours long (and if you know what you are doing probably only an hour long), and has little replay value, which on top of the many faults makes the game not really worth the asking price, in my opinion. It was an okay game, especially as I got it for free during the recent promo, but I think it is more of a 2.5 to 3 out of 5 star rating, I would not say it deserves anywhere near the many 5 star reviews I have seen for this game. I don't normally mind artsy indie games that much, but I think this one is just too over-hyped, not very interesting, has virtually zero story/plot, is dull, and the gameplay is not that well done. It feels a little like Never Alone did, an interesting idea, but poorly implemented. But where Never Alone made up for it was the story, the locations, and the historical facts you unlock, Limbo has nothing really to offer, and nothing that would make me want to ever play it again. There is apparently a secret level if you collect all the extras, but I think I am done with the game, so that will have to go unplayed as I have no desire to play this again.
*throws it on the pile of overhyped indie crap, along with Agent's Knock Knock "game". :-)
Did any of you play it? I would love to hear your thoughts if you did, especially if you liked it. Was it the style of the ending and the implied plot and possible symbolisation you can then apply the game that people liked so much?
Despite all that, if any of the regulars who use Steam missed the free promo but would like to try the game for yourselves (you might really like it), then I have the spare Steam Key it came with on Humble if you would like to play the game for yourself. Just let me know if you are interested in it.
