IAmSinistar: Brood V of the periodic cicadas is out now. Haven't spotted any in my area yet, but they may not reach down to Central Virginia this time.
I do have a ton of different dragonfly species around my lake right now. Also found their shed skins from their nymph-to-adult transition, which is similar to a cicada's except the dragonfly nymphs are aquatic. They are also terrifying. :)
I didn't even realize dragonflies shed their skin in such a way. Very creepy! Makes sense, but I've never seen one. How strange! We've a ton of dragonflies here as well, and they are quite fascinated with the chain leash we use to take Sarge outside. Rarely is there a trip outside these days without at least one dragonfly stopping by to land on the chain for a moment to say hello. Makes me wonder just what the metal shine of the leash must look like to them. I do have a ton of different dragonfly species around my lake right now. Also found their shed skins from their nymph-to-adult transition, which is similar to a cicada's except the dragonfly nymphs are aquatic. They are also terrifying. :)
*And I'm really not sure what sort of cicadas we have here now... It's just been the past week or two that they've been audible, and we saw a couple the other day. Maybe annuals? I don't recall hearing them every year, to be honest, but my memory is pretty bad. :)
