fables22: We'll see. There's been talks about recruiting moderators and there's also been some suggestions, but I don't think we'll be doing it any time soon. All GOG staff have the same moderating capabilities, so more than likely I'll ask a few of my colleagues to use them, if it seems necessary as per the forum rules.

jamyskis: As someone who has past experience in running and moderating a forum, I can only advise against recruiting moderators from the general community, no matter how trustworthy they may seem. One of my first jobs in the gaming industry was as a Community Manager and I can assure that whoever you pick as a "lay mod", they will almost always have an agenda or bias in terms of what they let slide, remove or ban. Keep your mods in the office.

For my part, I won't be doing it ever again.
We've already had that kind of problem with gogs other old community manager when he compared some of us to the Ku Klux Klan in a tweet.

JunglePredator: To me it means a more professional language & no use of slang, swearing or anything the belittles or makes fun of anyone's language in anyway. Language being an official language of a given country.
Quick question: Which of the two sentences, if any, is vulgar, and which one (again, if any) is perfectly acceptable in polite company.

-Can I bum a fag?
-Sure, let me reach into my fanny pack.
abusing the reputation and/or “report as spam” function.
How exactly is this going to be policed?

I would think, as indicated, to avoid any slang.

And ya... I know what you mean but I can't help think that people I know would actually be offended by the first one. Which is why slang is something to avoid. If confuses & can be used to inflame while going "but I was using it right!"... it's pushing against the rules & should marked as an infraction.

I can't think of anyone who would get offended by the general meaning of the second... in fact in practice around here it's considered less offensive than some of the other more common terms for the buttocks. But since it's slang... I don't think "appropriate" would ever allow any slang.

Well, fanny means different things around the world.

Here, fanny is slang for vagina, so yes someone could be "offended" by it.
Linking to cracks, key generators, and pirated content. However, discussions about piracy are generally acceptable.
Posting cheats, hacks, game exploits, and game spoilers - unless you clearly note that this is what your post is about at the top of it.
Using a third party’s intellectual property (full or partial scans of articles, books, full transcriptions of articles, etc.) unless you have permission to do so.
Doesn't Poland ahve fair use alws?
A few of those other rules like the ones I've quoted will be problematic or unnecessary.

For example the section on cheats is unclear do we need to post spoilers before posting or are they totally against the rules and if so why is that when almost all the gog games are single player and people use cheats to get more fun out of them or if they are stuck.

What about cd cracks for those of us with old versions of games or where the games company has closed down leaving games people have bought in a non working state?

Maybe we should give this a couple of weeks and see how they enforce these before we start freaking out about exactly what they are enforcing.

There are going to be a few bumps along the way here for sure but Rome wasn't built in a day.

Fables has already stated several times that a lot of these rules are going to be dependent on the situation and that the GOG staff will work with all of us on this regarding the interpretation of the rules by both forum members and forum staff. If there are problems, which of course there will be, we don't need to worry about being shut out/ignored here, and so long as we keep an healthy open dialogue with GOG I'm sure everything will work out.

From what I know, nothing I used is slang. But the two phrases come from different sides of the pond, and each side considers one absolutely normal, while the other one is vulgar.
And yes, they are both English, though one is en-uk and the other is en-us.

True.

I wasn't trying to argue just discussing with JMich about what the community standard here would be. :-)

OH I KNOW. :D
I meant that post as a general comment for the whole thread.
avatar
JunglePredator: (And since it was directed at me, I am of the opinion, that no one else has a right to comment on if it was offensive or not.)

Djaron: i wish more people could listen to such wisdom, tbh. To be it always seemed to be a basic truth but it seems you and i are a bit obsolete on this regard
Completely agree with both of you.

However, I assume you're aware of the other side of this coin: i.e. that anyone can feel offended by literally anything you say to him/her/it, and no one else has the right to comment on it.

swatkat: I had lost all my rep (from 1000 rep) and got a lot of my forum topics deleted even if i helped other users because they were reported as spam. I suspect them - really like the admins to investigate their forum behavior.
Only those two? If you're going to report people over that, you're going to have to report half the forum, who all know of the rules you yourself have broken, particularly:

-Impersonating forum moderators or other users.
-Spamming, bashing, flaming, trolling, or abusing the reputation and/or “report as spam” function.
-Creating multiple accounts.

So my personal suggestion to you is that you either back down or be prepared to fall under the same microscope.

Does buying an account apply to the Impersonating rule or should he be charged separately for that?

I'd like to second this.
Rules are only words. Where it all comes down to is how these are interpreted, which is, I suspect, why they are so vague. Too specific, and you'll get people endlessly trying to skirt around them and saying "Well, this doesn't TECHNICALLY count as breaking the rules, so I'm ok and you can't say anything about it!", and they'd be right. Leave it open to interpretation and you'll get actual people reading into the situation, people who are [presumably] not fooled by silly gimmicks like that.

Now, is it just me, or do other people feel like there's some sort of echo between the spring sale imagery and the sudden regulation of gog forums ?
