GameRager: What if the stuff being lost was truly important and one had to choose between the two...like say in an outlandish example one thing was the cure for a major diasease that wasn't backed up or easy to replicate vs. saving a handful of people? Which would you choose to save if you could only save one? The few people or the potentially large numbers that cure/research could save in the future?
Easy, the net profit in human lives is higher if you choose the cure. Also, you could sell the cure and make tons of money while saving more lives than in the first scenario. It's the better alternative from every angle.

I'm probably going to capitalist hell for even thinking about turning a cure into profit after sacrificing lives to get to that cure. But it would probably be the most efficient way either way in the long run.

Also one could use the money gained to fund more efforts to help people or cure other diseases.

It reminds me of MORDIN from Mass Effect 2....in it he tells someone basically there are various ways to "help" people....and not all are pleasant or palatable.

DreamedArtist: Update: CEO of the company says they lost all physical and digital work of years of anime they worked on. not a single backup was made as they had all saved in house on hard drives and computers. so that means all those shows they made from day one till now, the originals are ALL GONE! Clannad and everything.... I am amazed they did not back this stuff up safely and now a big part of anime history is gone.

GameRager: Not to be mean(and ppl will likely low rate for this), but if they didn't make backups and store such offsite then it's their fault for being dumb(the company, NOT the people who died).

Things like this are why i'm GLAD we have some people/sites backing up old media(legal or not legal to do so) for future generations because apparently companies are too dumb to do it themselves(or too cheap). :\
Japan has evolved technology wise, but the way to do things with either digital backups, security/home security as examples are very far behind the rest of the world. Sony was one big event that happened with having passwords and user data in a text document folder open for anyone to see. I do hope japan one day will start to increase appearance of their digital footprint and security laws to greater degrees. And rest in peace for the amazing talented artists who lost there lives. there work will never be forgotten even if the physical and digital masters where destroyed.

It is still odd to hear that Japan(who makes some amazing tech) is behind in some things like that.
