It'll be from the 2000's I think.PC. My memory is very fuzzy on it, but I'd like to play again/see if anything like a series came out of it/who the dev is/etc....
You select a race. Human, robot, alien. You are at this station which is home base. Some kind of count down mission timer happens while you are at this base. Like the base is under attack in X or the mission you selected to attack/invade a nearby planet will go under operation in X.
It has a room full of shuttles, you get on one and somehow windup ground side on the planet. Enemy will have hundreds of AI bot soliders, defensive turrets, as do you have a bunch of friendlies. You are controlling only one guy, though you might have been able to swap to a same/you bot if you get whacked..
Goal was I think varied to like blow some energy thing up or kill all. After all that you usually took the planet over. Then you could determine one or two things to build on the planet you took over station. Like commerce for $ income per turn or defensive stuff or soliders, maybe even technology research?
So you go and capture all these planets in this little universe and then part 2 of the game kicks in. Some powerful weird alien reaper kinda race comes in and messes you up fast as they have some really OP things they build on those stations, making what was a cakewalk into a war of controlled losses.
Winds up with a final boss against some kind of mother ship/monster.
*Only had one real planetary exploration mission, opposed to a battle, which was some kind of story/sidequests involving flashbacks and I want to say dinosaurs/pyramids.
