The DRM-Free Revolution Continues with Big Pre-Orders and Launch Day Releases!

Good news! GOG.com is going to bring you more fantastic launch day releases, preorders, and other exciting new content from some of our favorite developers. We've lined up 3 big titles that we will be bringing to GOG.com in the next couple of months for sale or preorder that we think will be hits with all of our gamers; and we have more equally exciting games coming up soon.

If you've been a member of the site for a long time, you may recall that when we launched sales of The Witcher 2 on GOG.com, we had to add in regional pricing. The game cost different amounts in in the US, the UK, the European Union, and Australia. We're doing something like that once again in order to bring you new titles from fantastic bigger studios. Since we don't accept currencies other than USD on GOG.com right now, we'll be charging the equivalent of the local price in USD for these titles. We wish that we could offer these games at flat prices everywhere in the world, but the decision on pricing is always in our partners' hands, and regional pricing is becoming the standard around the globe. We're doing this because we believe that there's no better way to accomplish our overall goals for DRM-Free gaming and GOG.com. We need more games, devs, and publishers on board to make DRM-Free gaming something that's standard for all of the gaming world!

That brings with it more good news, though! As mentioned, we have three games we're launching soon with regional pricing--two RPGs and a strategy game--and while we can't tell you what they are yet because breaking an NDA has more severe penalties than just getting a noogie, we're confident that you'll be as excited about these games as we are. For a limited time, we will be offering anyone who pre-orders or buys one of them a free game from a selection as a gift from GOG.com, just like we did for The Witcher 2.

If you have any questions, hit us up in the comments below and we'll be happy to answer (to the best of our ability).

EDIT: Since we've answered a lot of the common questions already here (and lest you think that we've ignored you), it may be handy for you to check out the forum thread about this and search for staff answers by clicking this link here. (hat tip to user Eli who reminded us that the feature even exists. :)

hedwards: An apology and removing this blight from the store. I think we'll probably get an apology as a measure to appease the rioters, but quite honestly, it should go way beyond that. I've been a supporter of GOG since just about the beginning and I'm getting tired of them making a fool out of me for trusting them.
It's not going anywhere, there are agreements that have already been signed according to TET.

I'm starting to give up on this letter appearing today - the delay is bad enough but not coming up at all reflects really poorly on GOG.

IAmSinistar: And can I just add that the Zloty is one of the greatest currency names ever? It sounds like what aliens would use for money in a bad sci-fi film.

Ghorpm: I think nobody corrected it so far so let me do it ;) It's not Zloty but ZŁOTY, with a letter "ł" (see article about it). We have 9 additional letters in Polish: ą ć ę ł ń ó ś ź ż

And if you think that sounds funny you clearly haven't heard W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie ;)
Or the real name for the city non-Thais call 'Bangkok'.

Krungthep mahanakhon Amon rattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit

You can hear how it sounds in Thai here - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Th-Bangkok_ceremonial_name.ogg

And yes, it is the world's longest city name.

Thais usually just call it 'Krungthep' -- the first words of the name, which translates to 'City of Angels'.
*twiddles fingers* Have my boycott post ready, if a rather hastily put together one written around some posts I already posted here, just waiting for that pointless letter to add a link to it just to show they still don't get that the problem is the betrayal of principles in itself and no explanations or different models of doing it will change that fact.

Fakum12: Regional pricing as standard for bigger titles?
Wasn't happy when you did this with the Witcher. But as a standard procedure?

Guess my time here comes to an end. Which is sad, but then again, if the developers want me not to buy their games - so be it.

P.S. And those free gift games do not change much - I had them all already bought last time.
If you read TeT's comments, it's not presented as standard. It is an option on the negotiating table now. Current games won't have it until and unless the publisher asks for it in contract negotiation.

IAmSinistar: So it's written in alien as well. ;)
Watch this and despair, my English-speaking friend :)

And yes, Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz is a valid and real Polish name...

Wow, ąćęłńóśźż forms another cool looking word. It could even be an Ork Boss name XD
And that last thing.. OMG, it could be some obscure reptilian language. :P

adamhm: The lawsuit came about because of GOG's decision to not use geo-ip to determine each user's region, instead just trusting whatever they had set in their profile (the lawsuit was also about CDPR's decision to remove the DRM from retail copies of TW2 but CDPR won on that issue).
avatar
Grargar: Is that really correct? Searches on Google reveal that CDPR was sued because Namco-Bandai objected to CDPR making a distribution deal for the X360 version of the game with THQ for Europe, thinking they had exclusive European distribution rights.
Ah yes, there was that as well.

There are agreements, however if TET has one shred of integrity left after posting all this dribble, it's that the publishers are the ones that made them agree to this. As in this point is something that could go away if they get sufficiently scared.

The whole business of doing something like this that they know damn well is going to piss off a huge portion of their customer base without bothering to do any poling or research is deeply disturbing.

It might not be possible to stop them from debuting the games with the regional pricing, but if we hammer hard enough something might well change.
avatar
IAmSinistar: Could be, financial bookkeeping is a somewhat inscrutable subject to me. So if that's what they bank after paying staff and office rental and maintenance and acquiring new product, then it's a pretty tidy sum.

Wonder where it goes? Volcano secret base? Orbital laser satellite?
avatar
Grargar: Nah, just some good old sharks.
If you ask me, I would love that some of those funds were put into making an improved version of the minimig so that they could also sell old games for every computer, console or arcade game made for the 68000, I would not mind if they called it the gog machine, I mean, steam has their own console, why can't gog have their own retro console?

Oh yes, I remember that :) A few years ago I was reading a book about funny things in different languages and Bangkok was listed there. One of the most funny books I've ever read :D
Did anyone already mention that GOG tries to accomplish the impossible, satisfy publishers who like regional pricing and satisfy customers who don't like to be ripped off. It doesn't work on principal grounds. GOG has to fail with the compensation.

Either it is not sufficient with free games that you already have and don't value that much or don't want to play at all, then customers of GOG will get ripped off. Or they introduce something that is effective like full compensation by giving a store credti worth the difference to the cheapest region but then publishers won't be happy because the regional pricing is effectively neutralized. Regional pricing always means that someone gets ripped off.

I feel sorry for GOG trying to appease naturally opposing forces. It cannot work out. One has to give.

Now the question is if the games are worth it. Looking forward to the reveleation of the names. When is it supposed to be?

How on earth do you pronounce this stuff? Even trying caused a strain followed by a fracture of my tongue muscles :-P

I'm not sure that anybody has mentioned it, but I thought that was the basic subtext. The changes that they're likely to have to make in order for region based pricing to work, are ones that people here aren't likely to like. I know that Steam does have it's ways of stifling the secondary market, and I won't buy anything here ever again if GOG stoops to anything like that to limit the secondary market.
avatar
phaolo: Umm.. so, just for curiosity, where are these (evil) new AAA games?
Or, is there any new info about the regional price?
avatar
Shendue: I honestly wouldn't care even if those were Monkey Island 3, Half-Life 3 and Shenmue 3 exclusives on GOG, as a matter of principle.
Well, I was just curious, for me it's mostly a problem of too high price.
I'm here on GOG for DRM-free cheap old games < 6$.
