I like how the DRM is rendering it unplayable. I'll stick with my gogs, but it sure was a fun game back in the day!

Crosmando: Tbh the fact that AoE2 has guns and cannons ruins it for me, it just doesn't feel right.

darthspudius: What would be better? Arrows? Rocks? Severed pig heads?
Hell yeah. You have to mod that now, replace the cannon body with a pig body which shoots off its own head with a massive oink. Imagine how different the charge of the light brigade would have been!

OldFatGuy: I don't know how someone that's as big a fan of AoE 1 (screw 2 and 3) didn't know about this remake.

So what do you AoE fans here at gog have to say about this remake?

Fine tuned and prettied up a classic.... or blasphemy???

ADDED: I have to ask because Microsoft is never getting another dime from me... even if the feedback is 100% positive. That said... it would make me feel better if I get a lot of blasphemies. lol
I've found this video with kind of review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XB2fhwxWMg

I played original AoE 1 and I liked it but not too much because I prefer TBS over RTS. Still I would play it again but I do not have nor going to use any DRM-based game accounts (like Steam etc) so probably I won't.
Win 10 only is a deal breaker for me, but other than that it looks good. Personally I prefer the time frame and civilizations of the first game over the 2nd and 3rd.
Yeah, even if I weren't thoroughly dedicated to never giving Microsoft another penny of my money the fact that it requires a Microsoft account would've been a deal breaker for me.

I still love the original one. My AoE disc was one of the losses in a flood last year and this is the first computer I've ever had that I didn't install AoE on almost immediately. It worked great (even on Windows 10) and was 100% DRM free. Install it... remove the disc.. and play it whenever I wanted. But I'm not even going to spend the money to buy that version again because... Fuck You Microsoft. Never. Another. Penny.
I thought AoE1 was amazing when it was new, but AoE2 basically improved everything, so imo that is the peak of the series. I never got into AoE3. Still, happy they're making a an Enhanced Edition version of it, though I don't expect it to be made available to me (DRM free, Linux user).

It was thoroughly superceded by AOE II an actual game. But not as an idea.

The idea of AOE was for an RTS game set in the ancient/classical age. And we still don't have a replacement for it.
AoE 1 vs AoE 2 is the same case as Disciples 1 vs Disciples 2. The original was good but the sequel is superior in every way.

I consider AoE 2 the best RTS of all time easily.

Regarding topic, if you have the original, the enhanced version is not worth it IMO.

We have a great one here: https://play0ad.com/
It’s still in development, but is already fully playable (and actually a great game). And as is often the case with open source software, it might stay in active development forever anyway ;)

How playable is 0 A.D.? It's been in development for almost two decades. I lost track when they kept adding more and more factions but admitted that they had no one to develop a good A.I. Does single player feel like a fulfilling experience already?

There has been a lot of progress on the AI side, and if I’m not careful enough it is fully able to beat me.
Granted, I do not play 0 A.D. often, so I don’t know if it is good enough to keep a good player entertained for a long period of time.

By the way, AI progress benefits the player too, as the pathfinding seems to have been improved quite a lot too.

For open source games in constant development like this one, if the experience is not great the first time you try it, I would suggest giving it a new try every year. This way you can have some really nice surprises when you discover a full year of improvements at once ;)
I really like AoE 1 and 2 but i couldn't get into 3, after trying it a few times i gave up.
AOE 1 was that game where you selected a cavalry and an infantry unit and sent them somewere, the horse would bump into the footslogger and just stop moving completely (!?!)

I really loved the setting but it was a chore to play.
Aoe 1 is my fav among the age of empires series , it was so simple and straight forward , no doubt the rest of the games in the series took huge positive leaps i felt the gameplay was getting complex each new series and more multiplayer oriented. Of course there is story getting better each time as well.

I was super excited when the aoe de was announced i have only played the beta invite i got and this were my impressions.

Pros:
->lovely visuals
->decent ui changes

Cons:
--> Tons of bugs and issues you know its a major issue when people cant download their game properly or a simple chat prompt crashes the game , have a look at the official forums cursed windows 10 store
-> remastered soundtrack is meh the original had its awesome feel good effect, this one sounds tame
->god awful ai yeah they are no better than the original.
-> you cant switch to the classic mode at anytime it only works for some game modes.

I am still hoping to get and play the full game hopefully on steam in the future....
This might seem silly to a lot of people, but I'd nevertheless like to know if someone else noticed this and also thought that of it as a big deal:
The first thing I noticed from the screenshots of AoE2 way back when it was still in development was the more realistic scale of buildings compared to units, which I just thought was incredible. It actually looked as if infantry could walk into and live inside the houses you built to increase your population.
Going back to AoE1, if that ever happens, then that more realistic scale from AoE2 is undoubtedly what I'd miss most.
