The 4GB split files for those who don't know is (was!) there, primarily, for FAT-32 file size limitation reasons. And they were good to have, and even now, especially for proper older games.

It is however truly ridiculous to not also have single "whatever size" files too. Not only, but too!! I'm downloading Cyberpunk 2077 via offline too**, and it's a joke. 27 files, all but two 4GB. Each has to be manually gotten, since they viciously and deliberately and for no valid reason disabled the magnificent GOG downloader. (A thousand curses upon them!!) Firstly, for Cyberpunk 2077, which requires a 64-bit operating system, the 4GB sizes are not truly relevant anymore. (...and again, keep the split version but ADD a proper single one!!) Browsers too can handle large file sizes now, now being for last decade or longer, so that's not an excuse either.

1.) Re enable the GOG downloader program!!! (yeah, right..)
and/or..
2.) Make available single downloads for the core game!!!!!
and/or..
3.) Allow FTP access to our own segregated accounts so we can grab "all" at once.

This is not just about Cyberpunk, obviously, but all games over 4GB. I happen to be going through the pain of doing it for Cyberpunk, so I mention it specifically, but this is how it is for everything.

PS: I don't care or want to use Galaxy or 3rd party software. (Or can Galaxy also download "installable" files as opposed to "loose" type, like Steam, for example, does? I want proper "offline" installers! ..and another question about Galaxy. The requirement page for it lists Windows 8 or newer. Does it actually requires Windows 8 for real? WTF? Does Galaxy not work on Windows 7, or they just don't want to show that? Nobody in their right mind uses 8, so it really means 10. Yeah, I still use Windows 7 - deal with it!! ..and yeah, downvote me all you like for it.) You mean not too long ago I was using an official program and now you would suggest using some third party tool that requires my account details, even if truly safe? Do you not see the absurdity here? GOG had their own offline downloader, and decided to phlegm spit into our faces by disabling its use.

yes, which is why they phased out the downloader. Galaxy has the exact same functionality, you can use it as a downloader only, and that means that gOg only need to manage one piece of software

If i get game larger than 4.3Gb game as a single file, to do on multiple DVD's i'd have to do a 7zip split archive. Not terrible but i'd also have to extract it onto the computer before i could extract the game.

Although i'm sure blueray is so popular now that it's in every toaster... And TotalBiscuit would call it 'a potato'.

Just FYI, Linux installers, even gigantic ones, are usually packed as a single downloadable file. There's no technical limitation involved, just an old system GOG is probably still clinging to (without much sense, as you so aptly put it).

ffs those 27 parts are a freaking pain in the a$$....

Call 7 dead if you want; XP and 7 are the only Windows OSes i'll touch. When i can't run them, get good hardware or even use them i'll just have to let all my games go and go full Linux 24/7 on every machine. 27 clicks! Oh my god!!!!

You've seriously never tried to download a 4Gb game at 200Mb chunks at 4k/s....

I don't know... If I had to burn 27 DVDs for one game, I'd start to re-think my backup / collection ways... at least for these kind of games.
Making 7zip split archives is the least of the work involved.

Are you sure you'd question the storage/backup method? Or you question the makers of the game making it so damn big. Why does it need to be 96Gb? And that's before it's unpacked. (which could be double...)

Then again, don't forget Windows 95/98/update did have the option of coming on 50 something floppy disks...

edit: Maybe some savvy company will sell hard drives with the game installers pre-copied onto them and mail them to you... then you don't hve to click 27 times or use 27 discs...

I wouldn't buy/play modern games if I didn't have the means to play them in an optimal way (as I see it). That includes having more than enough disc space to spare.
I haven't bought CP2077 (yet), because:
- Big backlog; why would I buy/play any game that isn't in its final release state when I have plenty of others still to play?
- I want a better graphics card for this one.

If I question the game makers; will they suddenly shrink their game? I'm not a programmer or business analyst so I can't tell you if the disc space usage is warranted or not.

Choosing how you store it, or generate the content can make a huge difference. Technical limitations have resulted in very interseting soultions to the space problems. Capcom managing to shove A Resident Evil game from the PS1 to a N64 cartiridge with all the content still present. (Albeit the videos definately too a hit) an incredible feat.

Some games use algorithmns to generate textures. Unreal engine you can store a texture or like 2k of data to generate a perfect any/resolution texture, you take a very slight performance hit to generate it.

I was told Skyrim for example to store the land data would have taken 10x more than the space the game takes up, instead it probably takes a seed for the area generates tree/rock/other layouts, and then applies changes to override. I've seen similar things in Unity tutorials for generating random brush trees and layouts, and you just cycle through to the seeds find one you like and go from there rather than placing everything yourself.

Other games, like Elite uses seeds and RNG to generate statistics of all the planets and worlds, letting you visit thousands of worlds.

Some games that didn't have much room (8k to work with? Atari?) used it's own code as images for static.

One Gamedemo i played was only like 32k, full 3D looked/felt a lot like Quake, nice gun models, interesting puzzles, in his commentary on the project he was talking about how he made and stored the models to make them as small as possible to fit within 32k.

Maybe a bunch of space is lost due to Mipmapping (storing multiple versions/sizes of a particular image for distance reasons) which could be generated closer to when you need them rather than having them all on disk at the same time.

Using different algorithmns for audio. Or maybe even doing a secdonary route of having music created using a tracker or something, and storing differentials when neccesary, taking what would be say a 10Mb song to 2Mb (course depends on the type of music, etc)

Maybe not having 4/8k texture sizes...

There's probably tons of ways to shrink a game and still have all the content, depends on how 'high end' of a machine you have.

You can buy a 5TB external hard drive for under 100$. So forget burning DVD's. That's a thing of the past.
