HunchBluntley: ...That really is one of the dumbest reasons I've seen for quitting the forum. Sachys' was pretty close, though.
People often miss one crucial thing about forum people like me and tinyE. We see the fun in things, situations and so on. Sharing that fun with others is something we truly like. That script is for us like if you put a stand up comedian in a empty pub. It gets to our core.
Yes we do it to get attention but sharing is also a strong motivation.

johnnygoging: now now, let's not attack people. because there's nonsense going on and it's been going on for a while. eventually even something small can piss someone off. I generally don't go in much for internet drama.

because internet

drama

internet drama.

and so forth.

but what it is is evidence that people care about something. and that trumps any kind of objective perspective from a certain frame of reference on something.
I wasn't attacking anyone. tinyE left because someone else made an optional userscript that allows people to ignore posts from specific users...a feature which, as was pointed out in that thread, many other forums have as a built-in function. And Sachys went off the deep end because people had the temerity to not follow his orders (and there's no doubt in my mind that they were orders -- not suggestions -- which he expected people to follow) regarding how to give away codes on the forums. I can totally see quitting because of harassment or pervasive negativity in the forums, among many more prosaic reasons (such as just getting bored). But those were...not very good reasons. Crew's probably right that those were more "last straws" than actual reasons (or, at least, in tinyE's case), but still....

I confess I only skimmed the thread, but I don't think that's the "because." I think his real message was a few posts prior:

"48 hours ago all I had to deal with is a few trolls telling me I'm an asshole, now I have my friends bragging to me about how much they hate each other. "

It's not the tool, so much as the deep cynicism, distrust, and bitterness that made someone(s) think a tool to limit communication (on a board that exists for the sole purpose of allowing communication) was a great thing. And it probably didn't help that the whole thread was people bickering back and forth for 150 posts.

In any case, he's been gone what, 24 hours? Maybe he comes back tomorrow and maybe he doesn't. I recently took 2 weeks off myself, which no one noticed since I'm not tinyE. ;)

If someone is always here it builds an expectation. :P

well let's not make assumptions about why people are doing anything. who knows what might have contributed to sachys and tinyE's position.

but a big part, is the crap that's been going on. and you can avoid it and avoid the threads it usually sprouts in but lately it's like every other thread. it's often. and it's just annoying to see regulars getting pissed off because of it.

Have you SEEN my posts? :P I understand that as well as anyone. But the forum is just that -- a place for meeting and mingling, not a stage for being in the spotlight. If I make a goofy post, I do it for...whoever happens to see it, not to get as much attention as I can. ;)
Besides, I don't think there's any real chance that all the forum regulars are going to be installing that script (I, for example, won't install any forum scripts). But even if literally everyone did, I don't think there's much chance that everyone would be so rash as to hide posts from literally everyone else they ever saw post anything remotely unpleasant, or who expressed an opposing opinion. There will be some who will do so, of course, and it's sad that those people will be living in their own little bubble-wrapped echo chambers, but at least those peeople won't be nearly as likely to get into arguments and start shit -- or downvote -- if they simply can't see a lot of posts which would otherwise set them off.

So we're tinyE addicts suffering withdrawal? ;)
avatar
Crewdroog: well the people who i think are doing the downrepping of the ones i'm particularly discussing, i think are non-troll regulars who just have a bone to pick. i don't think it's so bad asking them not to pick that bone there.
avatar
Breja: Sure it's not bad. I'm just saying you shouldn't be surprised if it doesn't work.

avatar
Crewdroog: hmm, the down-repping seems to be happening slowly. someone must have made a program to target certain people.

what.the.fuck.

really? really?

sigh.

i give up anymore, trash this place, fuck it.
avatar
Breja: I sure hope you don't mean you quitting too.
no, but i'm getting to my breaking point as well. i've really tried, but i'm getting fed up.

If anything, I've seen less of this drama this last month or so. Maybe I'm not visiting the right threads, though. (Or, if I'm missing a lot of drama, maybe I AM visiting the right threads.! ;D )

And Sachys was always volatile and touchy in the best of times (and often out-and-out rude), so who fucking knows with him. :)

Yeah so I was a bit surprised you didn't understand this.

That script changes this fora into lots of clubs for like minded people. It's poison for a open fora like this. I tell you I suddenly start to notice lots of unanswered posts I'll be gone or go into lurk mode.

All hail Galaxy! Been using that almost exclusively since I got my hands on it so no scripts here. :)

I really don't know what's getting on everyone's nerves lately. Is it just some chain reaction of users leaving? Because I really didn't notice any major problems lately warranting how it's all spiralling out of control now.

No you're not. You're just getting impatient and cranky because Doom 4 is taking so long to download.

Exactly. After the little rash of melodramatic "I'm leaving" threads a couple months ago, I thought it had kind of settled down.

I was in the same boat until recently.

once the derepping crap started and gog did nothing I knew it was going to be a matter of time before shit went sideways.
