Whenever I try to enter the manhole leading to the underground vault in the Necropolis I get the error "The Instruction at 00485f51 referenced memory at 00000000 The memory could not be read from." I have tried renaming the ddraw and application name but this still happens.

You might want to shoot an email to support with a dxdiag attachment and a screenie of the error. What you're getting sounds like something with the game itself rather than the OS.

Can you post your PC details? There are a few things it could be.
This can happen with old games under Vista, try running as Administrator if on this OS and not doing so already.
As always make sure you disable spyware scanning, virus scanning or other security software.
That may not be the cause, but I've seen those things cause errors like these in the past.
Memory errors usually means there's a corrupt file within the Master.dat file, you should try reinstalling the game (copy your saves over to a backup folder just to be sure you don't lose progress).
It'd be easier if you had the Fallout discs since in that case you could just drag and drop the Master.dat file and replace your old one.

Redownloading may be necessary as well.
Tried Downloading and reinstalling but the problem still occurs. Looks like I'll need to send an email to the Support section then.
Hello
Did you change DEP (data execution prevention) settings lately? Also did you try to set different compatibility mode on falloutw.exe file? If not try to set it to W95 or W98.
You can also check if in fallout.cfg file, in [system] section, you have set free_space to 0.
Tried the compatibility in Vista, XP SP2, 98 and then 95. Error Still occurs. There has been no known changes to the DEP and the set free_space is equal to 0.
