mothwentbad: It really sucks getting screwed for resources. If it weren't for my epic quiver/bow I found in a random shop, I never would have even made it that far.
jamotide: You can build everything without resources it just costs more (price of the resource) , there is no sense in gimping yourself to save some gold.
When invading other masters, they get all the starting benefits they have obtained (I assume), so they have a big advantage. These are the fights to spend lots of your own energy in.
If I don't have iron, then there's no point in unlocking troops with Iron costs unless I'm so far ahead that I know that they won't ever die. If I have to buy a new army every four turns, then the cost of iron will go through the roof and I'll go broke trying to keep up.
Maybe I'll wait a bit longer and try throwing all of my energy into one invasion. But I don't know what to do other than power game. Maybe I'll make a Commander, spam Brigands for most of the game, and switch to try to sustain a tier-two army with minimal losses while rushing to take over iron; maybe two monks and some horse archers with swordsmen for the font line; maybe Pikeman for the front line and Crossbowman for the back line, alternatively. iirc, the invasion was an Average size map.
