I was wondering if a blue could answer this....

The developers of the new game Overload are going to be releasing the official Descent 3 1.5 patch soon. Will GOG update the Descent 3 version even though it's not sold anymore?

Also, there has been talk by the developers of releasing Descent 1, 2, and 3 completely open source. If that happens, would GOG package DXX-Rebirth with the Descent games and have them on here for free?

I thought that the source for D1/2 were already out and this is why we have D1/2x Rebirth.

D3 source would rock
The source for the executable is out, but not the data files. That's why Rebirth still needs the original data files from the games.
Yes, I remember reading that this weekend. Damn old age. :D

Yeah, but I didn't want to open a support ticket over it :)

You do realize the blues do not regularly read all the game forums? I suppose you could always contact them via social media instead.

Lol! Yes, but occasionally they drop in. I might shoot one of them a PM.

Descent 1 & Descent 2 source have been out for a long time, so yes, your supposition is correct. 3 has never been released, though while I'd love that to change, I wouldn't hold my breath, as releasing a patch for a thing you're granted source to (or wrote yourself) is one thing, but gets hairy once rights to the game start to need to be considered. This issue came up about a year ago with the Commander Keen source, and it never ended up being released.

The developers of Overload (Original Descent developers) want to release the source for D3 but will release a 1.5 patch first.
Source for that allegation?

We'll see if it doesn't become a rights issue. Situations like these have a way of becoming tangled.

As Kevin said, he and Jeff Sutter are working on it, so I'm hopeful we'll have a 1.5 release soon.
Exact quote :
"I don't think it's likely that we'll port to any new platforms. We're not on the best of terms with Interplay these days, and we'd have to do it with them. It's possible that we'll release the source code at some point (we'd have to do a lot of work before that happens) and if we do people could port to all sorts of platforms."

These aspects are as much on the legal side as the source-scrubbing side. There's a reason the Keen source was never released and NOLF didn't see rerelease, and those didn't have the adversarial relationship that Parallax and Interplay do. As I said, keep expectations low.
Now that Descent 1/2/3 are back I remembered this topic.

Has anybody found anything about 1.5 except the following thread on the Overload forums? https://playoverload.com/forums/topic/descent-3-update-discussed-during-24-hour-kickstarter/
You won't see any progress on it yet, as Revival are busy with Overload. Once that has been released maybe they'll find some spare time to update D3.
